Jasmine's mum lives alone in a five-bedroom house in London. But behind the front door lies a shameful secret. The house is filled, literally from floor-to-ceiling, with things she can't bear to throw out. Piles of old clothes, bags of toys, even broken bits of kitchen appliances, the rubbish mountain fills every room. And it's still growing.

Poor woman, what a dreadful thing to waste her life that way. But she is very, very lucky to have such a high quality daughter. And her sons too - she must be an exceptional person to have brought up those beautiful people, despite the environment.

I feel so much for the daughter, she’s fighting so hard for her dear mum. I hope the family has better relationships by now.

I remember watching this. And thinking, despite the dysfunction, what a nice and decent family.

I know it's shallow but how beautiful the daughter is...Amazing.

For anyone who doubts hoarding being a illness has to think about how desperate you would have to be to think your house burning down would be the easiest option for you 😢

Jasmine Harman is a well known presenter of my favourite holiday programme, a Place in the Sun, Home or Away Place in the sun and she is a true star 🌟. She has a beautiful, warm and sunny personality that makes her stand out from the other female presenters.

I think 10 years on we are starting to understand the impact of trauma more. Simply cleaning up or throwing away is like ripping away the safety blanket. It just wont work. It will only retraumatise. Because It's just a symptom of a root cause. Trauma therapy eg EMDR for her trauma (her dad being suddenly murdered and moving countries a lot is INCREDIBLY traumatic for a child and makes it all make perfect sense) is what she needs. Then the coping mechanism eg the hoarding isn't needed and becomes easier to start sorting through physically. People don't just get born with a hoarding disorder, It's just the way their symptoms of trauma come out. She lost so much. Complex PTSD is so real. I hope she's been able to heal more through the years and her sons have come to more of an understanding that choice is nothing to do with it.

0:52 This sums it up 99% of hoarder's personality (edit: thanks for putting the date of this video's original airing, anachronism is a disease).

Hard core hoarding sickness … this women is suffering and very ill … where is the father of the 5 children in all of this chaos ? I agree she seems depressed . Hopefully she will come to the point of choosing family over stuff 😮😮😮 wishing healing & peace ✨🇨🇦 LOVE Jasmine & her endless patience !

This is also a way for the mum to keep her children near to her, worried about her...even if it's not conscious. They have to take care...

Maybe Im just sensitive, but I really cried when I saw the mom at first, she looks tired or like she’s suffering and wants to do better but can’t, and when the daughter starting crying when the mother was talking to the psychologists. Maybe also cuz I slightly relate to the mom a little bit too. I am 16 and I can’t help but keep everything I receive. Im young and I don’t work so I don’t have money to buy things and i come from a slightly poor family that can’t really afford gifts, but things I do receive and have received throughout my life I can’t help but keep. from old, useless letters to rubbish to empty packaging to random bits I have to keep them because I can’t bring myself to throw or get rid of anything. My room is a mess full of garbage kind of like hers and I can’t help but breakdown and heart races a lot and I feel like I can’t breathe and cry whenever anyone touches anything or moves it or tries to clean my room. My mom has tried and I have too but my mom doesn’t understand. my case isn’t as bad as the moms in this video and I hope it doesn’t ever get to that but Im glad someone is a little like me and I feel like I really understand the mom and I hope she’s doing better now and is living happier and her children too. ❤

How do they not provide her with therapy throughout the process? Hoarding is obviously just a symptom 🤷‍♀️ the two guys who were ‘specialists’ in hoarding were questionable at best and appeared not to help at all. She wasn’t ready to tackle whatever trauma/grief it is that makes her hoard, I’m not sure how helpful this has been in the long run 😢 good intentions all around but this lady needs a lot more support past just family support.

Any info on the dad?
Maybe this is the reason why she’s holding so much?

The UK has a problem with lonely seniors living on their own. The loneliness becomes too much and tend to buy unnecessary things which lead to extreme hoarding. Is there no solution for these lonely senior people?
