I know exactly how she feels, these are my parents and my mother has undiagnosed mental illness (we suspect schizophrenia) but she refuses to get help for anything.

My ex is a harder/animal hoarder and he only has intermittent water to his house. The house smells for a distance even when it is closed up. He smells. It is so sad.

Reminds me of my moms old house. Even the little ankle bitter dog. This is just horrible for any child to go through.

(Sorry, this is gonna sound blunt and unkind) Hoarders are gross, but people that hoard animals are especially bad. They want to live in filth, fine, but animals an children don’t deserve living like that. That’s abuse and neglect.

I don’t understand hoarders. I can’t get it. It’s dirty, it’s filthy, dangerous, abuse to children and animals. I just don’t understand the filth . Maybe the collecting but not the filth

I'm an only child to hoarding parents. My father was both physically and emotionally abusive. Inside the house, barn, and RV things were piled high. The typical hoarder house with one path from the bed to the couch to the bathroom. The house is one thing but what's worse is have 70 acres. Growing up we had cattle. I moved away after high school, half way across the country to get away from it all. At some point my father decided to "rescue" several horses and donkeys yet never took care of them. This is on top of 50 some odd head of cattle. His fences weren't being maintained so the horses and cows would get out. As far as the horses: He kept a them all together (males and females) so they would breed and just make more babies every year. The males would attack each other over who got to breed the females so they were all beat up from fighting. They were completely wild so you couldn't even get close to them most of the time. One horse had a bridle on that I couldn't get close enough to to take off so it just rubbed and rubbed against its head leaving a "rope burn" type of issue. They weren't being fed properly, wasn't enough grass for them all to eat so the grass was heavily over grazed causing bad erosion during rain which made the top soil worse which meant even LESS grass next season and so on

He would say NO to any advice or plans to fix the situation and would force my mother to do whatever he wanted. He would become very hostile to any ideas or suggestions that weren't his. Any attempt at a rational conversation about pretty much anything was generally met with him disagreeing and then completely shutting down and going non-verbal. He wouldn't articulate his reason for saying no he would simply say "no". When asked why it was always "I don't think it's a good idea". My mother is very Christian so in her belief system the "husband is always right and it's the wife's duty to follow his commands no matter what" this went on for 35 years of marriage.

After years and years of trying to use reason and pleading with him to take care of it to no avail, his wife (my mom) finally stood up to him had someone come out and round them up to be taken to the sale.

He went ballistic and said that she "stole his animals" and became violent and crazy. It ended with him going to jail. We are still struggling to cope with everything. We are poor so the property is still in bad shape - better than it was but I fear it won't be truly dealt with until they both pass on... which means it will ultimately all fall on me.
