Understanding Meniscus Tear Treatment Options: When it comes to meniscus tears, treatment isn't one-size-fits-all! The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons updated guidelines emphasize personalized care approaches.
🏥 Non-Surgical Treatment (First Line):
- RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
- Physical therapy to strengthen surrounding muscles #PhysicalTherapy
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Corticosteroid injections for pain relief
- Biological therapies (emerging options)
🔬 When Surgery Might Be Needed:
Meniscus Repair - Best for younger patients with tears in the "red zone" (area w/ good blood supply)
- Success rate greater than 80% at 5 years
- 6-9 month recovery #KneeRehab
Preserves natural knee mechanics
- Helps prevent early arthritis
Meniscectomy: Partial removal of damaged tissue
- Faster recovery
- Good for "white zone" tears
- Less invasive option
- Quick return to activities
🎯 Key #MeniscusTear Facts:
- Not all tears need surgery
- Location/type of tear guide treatment
- Physical therapy plays a crucial role in all treatment paths
- Early intervention often leads to better outcomes
Your meniscus handles 2-3X your body weight during normal walking - proper treatment is crucial for long-term knee health.

My bucket tear was misdiagnosed as patellar maltracking. I was told to strengthen my knees which lead to more popping and locking until it one day fully locked my knee shut. Causing a 40k surgery and 3 months of no work. They did save the meniscus though. That was fun, been about 4 years now and it still clicks and clacks but hasn't fully locked up yet. 😂

I've tore my meniscus four times and had surgery on both knees. I think it's torn again.. any thoughts on the NuSurface meniscus implant? They do it in other parts of the world and it's in testing now in the US. Thank

Hi doc,
I got a minor tear on my posterior horn of medial meniscus 2 months ago and since then I’m doing rehab exercises my range of motion is improving but I cant climb up the stairs as it hurts. Do I need surgery? Can I go back to playing football? I also hear many popping when I extend my knee

So my girlfriend had a tear in her meniscus 2.5 years ago, 2 years ago she had surgery, and they stitched the tear together so it could heal, fast forward to today: she still has the same amount of pain, can't even walk for 5 minutes without limping and tried everything in the books to fix it, what can we do to get rid of that pain?

Hi doc.

Question.

I have a meniscus tear and a grade 2 acl tear. I injured myself while playing soccer. I was told by doctors that I need to have a surgery to get fully back to sports.

Since I dont trust my city doctors I didn't opt for surgery. This happened in 2022 and fast forward today I can run and play soccer as well. But I dont have the same mobility as before and my speed is also reduced. But I can still run and do leg workouts.

Should I still go for surgery, or will ignoring the advice previously given cost me in the future?

(Sorry if my question was dumb.)
