In this guitar lesson for beginners, I teach you how to play the F guitar chord. This F guitar chord is perhaps one of the biggest hurdles for beginner guitarists out there. In this video i'll break down 4 alternative ways of playing the F chord with varying degrees of difficulty starting from easy up to the F barre chord.

The F chord appears quite a lot in music and is also so crucial as it forms the basis of the barre chord shape which all guitarists NEED to know. For more on guitar barre chords check out my lesson below

I love how it says "Best" instead of "Hard", very encouraging.

My F CHORD journey:

Hi guys! I learned playing guitar from his videos. I first time saw this video around an year ago, 2 months after buying the guitar. Then I started practicing F chord.

First few days: Unbearable pain in fingers, especially index finger and thumb muscles. Couldn't play at all.

1 month: Still pain in fingers, sounded somewhat better but not good. Last 2 high strings where hardest to play. B string was always dead or distorted. Sometimes got very very frustrated like thought of breaking the guitar.

3 month: COULD PLAY F CHORD! But very slow chord changes. Thumb muscle still hurts.

6 months: Could EASILY play F chord, and other bar chords. Chord changes with open chords and other bar chords somewhat better but still slow, around 3 seconds gap in between changes. Thumb muscle still hurts. Singing along with playing guitar very difficult, couldn't do together.

1 year: Open and bar chords progression containing F chord faster such that it sounds good with songs. Can sing and play together but still its hard and requires lots of concentration.

Now: So yeah, can easily play F chord mostly sounding perfect, can do chord progressions with F chord fast. Can sing while playing rythms with F chord but still struggling in this aspect. Fingers and thumb muscles hurt less! And of course, still

Conclusion:

You may check out this video to see how I play now with both types of F chord:

I play ukulele and I've been trying to learn how to play the guitar now, and a lot of the chords that are literally the easiest are so much harder on guitar, thank you for the tutorial!

Being able to play an F in any song is actually a huge Flex 😂

The "classic" teaching methods always give you the full F chord and nothing else. But training the hand by slowly progressing from the simplest to the full chord seems better and more encouraging.

every time I search for a new song to learn, as soon as I see F (or any bar chord) I skip to the next lesson in the hope of finding a version without one! Guess im going to just have to keep practicing.

70years old, I finally cracked it thanks to you. Now I’m refining it by playing Dylan’s ‘My Back Pages’ the song really makes you learn to change chords smoothly.
Keep up the great work & I’ll definitely be subscribing to your lessons online workshop.

Thanks. That has really helped. Now I can actually manage a fairly clean F chord without sounding any dead strings. Trouble is I look like I'm having a seizure. Practice I guess.

It's nice to know that the F chord can be played more easily. I try to play it with even the most difficult variant, but there was a problem with switching chords. So I would like to thank you for this video.

Pro Tip: Dont give up! I have almost master this thanks to this tutorial and Ive been practicing roughly a week...10 minute sessions of practice in between work just alternating chords and such...trust me, it will get easier.

I have been playing the guitar for a month and can already play some songs, but those songs don't have an F chord so Id say Im a beginner.
Then suddenly I find the guy I watch a lot on YouTube show me how to do the full F chord.
I thank you so much you helped me

First when I got my guitar I could barely play the basic chords and had no idea how strumming patterns work so after about a month I ended up giving up and didn't play guitar for over a year. Thankfully I've made a friend who really loves music and they can play a couple instruments well which inspired me to pick up my guitar again. Thanks to them I've made a lot of progress in these past 2 weeks. I re-learnt all the basic chords and can switch between them easily and I'm able to play a couple simple songs. Now I'm here, struggling to play the F chord, but this time I'm not going to give up, because my friend belives that I can do it, so I'll keep trying. I'm sure all of you will manage to play it eventually, just be patient and try your best :]
