This one could be better. You shoul use Projection instead of nearest to surface so you wouldn't need to scale the object (which is a non-precise way of doing it)

instead of adding more geometry like a noob, how about you just texture it onto the mesh?

This method is better for retopology than creating decals.
Generally, its better to make the decal part of the texture.
