Jocko, these podcasts have changed my life. I started training muay thai and boxing 10 years ago when I was 17 and have fallen back in love with it since listening to the podcast. I'm now training 7 days a week with early morning strength and conditioning throughout the week. I have also moved out of my parents house, enlisted in the Canadian Forces, have a career bought my own house and have my own garage gym. This podcast has influenced me to get after it! Thank you Echo Charles and Jocko, and we love the podcast from Canadian Forces Infantry

"Fear is your perception of an unknown threshold. The more unknowns you think you have the greater your perceived fear. Notice the use of the word "perceived". It's what you think you know projected onto the outside world. You don't know what's gonna happen a year from now, 3 months from now, a week from now, even a second. Stop pretending you know what's gonna happen and start focusing on what you have to get down right now. That's what's gonna make the biggest difference.." ~ Richard Machowicz

"Inoculation" is just simply the best word to use for this. It's a single word and easy to remember but with very clear and deep meaning regarding how to deal with fears.

I will like how he talks about exposure therapy without ever saying that term. There’s a lot of people on YouTube that use the psychology jargon and explain what to do, but Jocko has lived it and brings a different perspective to all these topics! Love it! Keep it up!

I had fear of working at the post office and taking on the responsibilities of a mailman but thanks to Jocko I have overcome them. It has basically turn out to be all in my head the fear and worries of not getting the job done, or not learning the job fast enough was all mental and I was basically killing myself to the point where I quit without trying, but I got another chance and I am just grinding and being the best I can.

One of the most powerful ways to go about this is to force yourself to do the things you find absolutely disgusting. Exposure therapy, as profoundly uncomfortable as it gets, chosen. Again and again till you can’t think of anything possibly more uncomfortable. This can also be done with freezing cold endless workouts and other but being absolutely disgusted on your body is most potent in my experience. It really, really works.

I love how Jocko understands that people are different and how he might be able to just do something but his daughter needed a much more gradual and gentle approach. Too often we project ourselves onto others and maybe one person might face this fear by just going on stage and facing it all at once but others might need baby steps.

My biggest fear is that of jumping over things. I run up to an obstacle I could propably jump over and I stop. My brain just keeps me from doing it and this fear really holds me back. Thanks for the specific advice in regards to confronting it!

Great video - so true. The flip side to the coin of fear is resilience --> getting used to failure, learning from it and getting better.

Jocko is a really wise man, not only tough as a boot :). It's just natural in him, and he does teach it really good.

Went a couple of times to sparring, each time got my butt kicked without landing a good shot. People said you're doing fine, but I honestly did not believe it. Today I had opportunity to spar again, but I have some foot pain and used that as an excuse. Now, 2 hours later, I'm pretty pissed at myself. I've started living through a god damn screen instead of facing dangers in real life. I am way too comfortable and have no risk in my life, which significantly decreased my enthusiasm and sense of adventure. I want to become a man, a leader, I want to protect my friends and family if need be, but I can't even get over the fear of sparring or even approach a woman cause *there is a chance* of getting rejected. I believe I described what is torturing society today. We lose to our fears, get beaten down by them, but instead of getting up and fighting back like the warriors we were meant to be, we seek comfort in instant gratification like the internet. We've built a safe zone where exposure to fears is voluntary, but before it was a must. Eat or be eaten. Kill, or be killed.
