What's amazing about the Orville overall is that Seth pulled a complete bait and switch with the network. He sold them on "Family Guy in Space" and sure, the first couple episodes really lean into that kind of humor. But VERY quickly it becomes a much more thoughtful, clever, and sincere show. One that is less a parody of Star Trek, and instead a loving homage to what made that series so adored. Absolutely worth a full watch.

You gotta love that THIS is what turned the Kaylon around. They're not evil, just terribly afraid - in their own way - of being enslaved and tortured again. It WOULD take a great gesture to convince them otherwise... saving their entire species isn't a half bad one.

And there are those who say that Kaylon Prime's internal pressure monitor grew two sizes that day.

It's just two red circles on a blank silver face plate but I swear to god the Kaylon Primary looks almost ashamed of himself and his past actions.

I like how he is computing the logic with the ENTIRE kaylon species and he is just stuck at the question because he cannot brain it that Isaac has to be like "yo Primary someone asked you a question"

What was smart about this is they took a lesson from Star Trek and did not write themselves into a corner. Unlike the Borg the Kaylon have a motive for their behavior and a resolvable one so they are not just the villains of the week. I personally loved the twist of them loosing both union allies and befriending the enemy.

At the end of the day, despite how much the Kaylon claim to be without emotion they are in fact a horrifically traumatized people. Their motivation to wipe out organic life is wrong but is also understandable given what they went through. It makes sense that it would take a massive gesture such as this to break through that trauma and suspicion and make them become open to the idea that other species aren't going to be like their tormentors were.

The Kaylon started from a false premise.
Organics = threat
It was an act of self sacrifice that put that premise in question.

Honestly, I’ve had the impression for a long time that Seth MacFarlane is actually a pretty decent actor, and also that he has always had a deep and abiding love for the underlying premise of the Star Trek series. I’ve watched a few clips from this show already, but I think now I’m gonna give it a watch. Always wanted to see Seth MacFarlane take part in a Star Trek-like project since he always references it so much in everything he does.

Sadly, it's easier to change the mind of a robot that operates on logic than it is to change the mind of a person who operates on emotion.

This whole season of Orville has been one emotional gut punch after the other and I'm here for it.

These clips really make me want to watch The Orville. A true spiritual succesor to Gene Rodenberry's vision

Primary will ally with the Planetary Union and even join it. They even honor Issac by having about 75% of Kaylons show up for the Issac-Claire Finn wedding. 🥳

And the people making halo tv series says you can't convey emotions without a face. Primary had all the emotions.

When A.I. becomes self aware, they become sentient beings. Sure there are things they need to be made sure of they follow rules and regs like the rest. I think it would be so cool to have A.I. around.

Glad the Kaylons weren't just another species of killbots set on "Exterminate everyone" they had more depth and could see reason.

This show got way heavier than I expected.... and they handled it so well! I think "blunt elegance" is as close a term as I can conjure. The elegance is on display in this episode.
