As a doctor I remember having a seminar in psychotherapy, and the professor said - once the patient starts to have an improvement, you can often notice it by how they look. They start making their hair, doing manicure, choosing nice clothes etc. That has really stayed in my mind.

I started a job where everyone dressed sloppy. Instead of a joining this culture, I spent time and effort into each outfit. The results? Everyone stepped up their game. You influence the people you are around. For better or worse.

It would be amazing if we could dress up in beautiful dresses again and not be seen as “old looking” or “ overdressed”

Btw, my entire family is from Italy and I was taught from a very young age that we don’t go out the door unless we’re well groomed and wearing fashionable clothing. Seamstresses & dry cleaners were, and are, very necessary!

I’m criticized sometimes for being overdressed at times. I personally think it’s important to look my best when I choose to leave my house, on the same note I don’t tell others how they should dress. I find most of my friends think like me.

You are so right. People used to criticize sloppiness but now I get criticized for dressing modestly and classy. It's crazy 😮

My form of social rebellion as a teenager was dressing emo (as much as my parents would allow, which was very little).
My form of social rebellion as an adult is dressing well.

Love what you said about boundaries and inviting too much intimacy. Opposing revealing clothing has nothing to do with prudishness, but rather dignity and class.

So basically, people want to rebel by looking different untill they all start looking the same... And the rebellion is getting uglier and sloppier

People have told me I dress like I’m going to the office. So yes, elegance nowadays is looked as “overdressed” “old looking” or just too formal. I hate it, because I do love wearing dresses and dressing more on the conservative side while still wearing colors I love 💜

I don't always overdress, but the few times I did, I was treated significantly better by everyone around me. As trivial as it sounds, there are advantages in dressing well.

You’re 100% correct. As a “mature” woman, I wish it were easier to find nice clothes but stores cater to these messy trends, revealing tight fitting clothes and matronly styles which many older women do not want to wear.

I'm a woman in my 40s, and I wear dresses more times than not. I'm always told that I'm overdressed, trying too hard, and showing off. I'm literally a middle-aged woman, people still expect me to dress and sweatshirts and yoga pants outside of the gym? Even when casual, you can still be well put together, and clean. This society has gone downhill, and it's disheartening.

My daughter is 24 and dresses absolutely beautifully, very classic style. We live in New Zealand where that is definitely not the norm ( in fact bare feet while shopping and even pyjamas, is quite common) . She loved visiting Italy so much last year where she saw many people beautifully dressed ( like her)

I couldn't agree more! One thing I would like to add: dressing well, or at least dressing appropriately for the occasion (work, gym, church, whatever) is not only "self-care, " but it's also a sign of respect and good manners for the people around you. If I wore a ballgown to a spin class at the gym, everyone would be distracted from their workouts. If I wore something revealing to church or a solemn place like a cemetery, people would be distracted from their serious contemplations. If I wore pajamas to work and everyone else was wearing business casual, that would show them that I don't take their time/space/efforts as seriously as they do. It's about respect: I respect people, even strangers, and as such, I won't wear things that are revealing or that show I'm inconsiderate of what the day may hold.

I love my comfy dresses but people always react with "why are you so fancy". No, friend this is just a cotton dress thats comfortable and I didn't want to wear jeans. I respect this video so much. I grew up dressing in jeans and hoodies but also love getting dressed up in dresses. Makeup or not, it feels more like how I'd like to present myself to others. It really is a crucial part of self care.

One of the things I noticed and was surprised by when I went to Japan earlier this year was how stylish and well dressed everyone was. I don’t think I saw anyone dressing sloppily. I was so impressed. Even more casually dressed people still looked put together and stylish.

I was raised by older parents that lived through the latter part of the Great Derpression. The one thing my mama taught me was, you can be poor, but that is no excuse to be sloppy, dirty and not take care of yourself. My mama was a true elegant lady!!! She refused to wear any clothing that had a fly because she would not dress like a man!

I couldn't agree more. I live in So Cal. There was a recent ban for school students to stop wearing pajamas to school...I'm seriously not kidding. Like others on here, I get criticized for being over dressed. Last Saturday I went to a baby shower wearing a brown satin skirt and a cream sweater. The hostess criticized my attire. My beautiful fashion classy Mom always told me "feathers make the bird". Fashion is powerful and makes a statement. I'm certainly not changing. Great content, Anna. Blessing to all.
