This video series is an educational project that is being sponsored by Google.

We have gone over what causes burnout, what happens in our brain to cause it, and how diet, exercise, and relationships can either improve it or make it worse. I hope you have learned a lot in the past 14 weeks, and you keep paying attention to your own signs and symptoms of burnout so we can manage it before it becomes a problem.

Wow! I can't believe the series is finished already...doesn't feel like 14 weeks! But thank you so much Kati! I have learned so much through the series, especially about noticing when I'm beginning to get burnt out. I know over the years I've let myself get completely burnt out through different jobs, but I'm aiming for that not to happen again!

Kati. You're not counseling me directly, but these videos have given me permission to work with my counselor more openly and have better language for a conversation. Thanks for making these.

You are absolutely correct, the rewards from working simply does not add up enough to balance your life out.

I've been burned out for so long that I no longer remember what it feels to be any other way.

I know why I am this way. I took on jobs for one reason: to earn money so that I could have enough money to leave home and live on my own. That meant that I took the first jobs I could find, which were lousy jobs, and nowhere near commensurate with my qualifications. Then I got to leave home and big surprise! It was not all it was cracked up to be! Meanwhile back at the ranch, I was grindstoning my nose at these wretched jobs. It didn't help that I grew up with such poor self-esteem that I didn't believe I deserved anything better. I'm well aware of that I did it to myself, but the fact remains that I am chronically burnt out. Ultimately, I had to take a medical retirement after 30 years. By that time, I had landed my dream job, but the damage was so severe that I couldn't handle the stress.

I am retired now, and frankly, I am giving some thought to going back to school. I certainly don't expect further education to lead to gainful employment. I just like the idea of being a life-learner, and I have it in my head that adding to my knowledge might improve my self-esteem.

Thanks Katie. This entire series has been insanely well timed with events in my life. I just finished a stretch of a year's worth of working 60 hours a week with only scattered days off. I recently got a huge promotion at one of my jobs and thus quit the second job. Hello 40 hour work week! However I'm finding that I still feel like I got hit by a train. The recovery hasn't been quick as I hoped and this series is giving me a lot of excellent insight into ways to recover and regain that strength that got me into the 60 hour weeks to begin with without (hopefully) having to repeat that process in the future.

I think us psychologist sometimes forget we're people as well and experience burn out. It's so important for us mental health professionals to take care of ourselves so we can help others.

Looking in to burnout a lot recently with having my own company! It really affects every aspect of my life and try to justify it by the ends justify the means...

Katie~ I would love to see a video from you on the topic of burnout and stress on University students. I am on break currently but am about to start up the quarter again next week. I am excited but also terrified. The time pressure and work load college is a lot to handle alongside mental health and remembering to use skills / care for myself.
