The key center is A Aeolian. To find the key locator or tonic think A +1 1/2 steps = C. That's how I was taught to look at it. Thanks for the video.

Public service announcement:

I am aware that there will be people that do not agree with the approach I'm taking in this video in regards to key. The approach that I'm using here is not "better" than the standard approach of defining "key" as the main sound of the progression (The main chord is Am = key of Am, the main chord is C = key of C). It's just an alternative view that keeps things simpler, and emphasizes the origin of these sounds. You can approach things however you'd like, as long as you are aware of where these sounds actually come from.

I approach teaching keys like this, because I hear the phrase "I know my major keys, but now I'm working on my minor keys" all too often. That is a phrase that doesn't make sense, because if you know your major keys you also know your minor keys. Again, you don't have to approach it like I'm doing, but it is available if it makes things easier to understand!

Yay relative major and minors! I'd still argue that your playing in different keys, but I can see where this thought process could be a good starting point. I could see it also making it difficult for people learning theory to recognize that major and minor keys are different. Especially getting into the minor scales.

Whew. I’m so glad I just play what sounds good and makes sense.

Glad to see a pro say this is ok. I've been thinking this way while learning and see a lot of negative feedback to the idea.

Totally get this idea, this is the reason why I've started to use the word scale more often than keys. Keys are a collection of all the notes you have, where scale is the flavor you chose to use the key. Scale can also mean the alterations we do to the base key like in the case of harmonic minor or whole-tone scales. And modes as the variations in which each scale can be used, say the aoelian mode in a major scale is same as minor scale

I've been playing guitar for over 15 years. You explain things so well. This is how I view the key of a song as well. I'd love to hear you talk about modes.

Your channel is quickly becoming a favorite of mine🔥🔥🙏 so helpful

Amen!!! Really annoyed with all this minor scale numbering system when in reality it's just a mode of the major scale... Why make us change the numbers for the same thing!! Love this!!

Finally, somebody gets this right and uses tht Roman numerals in the logical non-confusing way. Making the V chord I in Mixolydian is just stupid and hideously confusing.

LoG is absolutely correct.

I really like the way you describe that situation it makes sense

Relative minor, helps to reference the circle of 5ths

That's how I've been trying to look at it, too. If I'm understanding correctly, minor is just the Aeolian mode and since we think of modes as a major key starting at some other degree, minor can be treated as such.

Literally playing in the Key of A minor, C major's relative minor. Am is your I, Dm is youre IV, and G is your VII. Literally just a classic I IV VII chord progression.

Alright class! Today we’re gonna be playing a piece in the key of the 6th of C! 😆
I’m loving the explanation & the controversy! 😆🥳
Great replies, too! Putting in work! 🎉
You know your stuff!

I thought it’s just me but I’m thinking this way too, it’s just 2 different modes in the same key, just makes the brain works less by thinking this way.

I like this approach, instead of memorising seperate minor key chord numbers, just use the relative major. Wouldnt this make it easier to find the triads of each chord within the scale too? If you use only one numerical system? Thanks for the vid!

Once again, another brilliant explanation. Thank you Jedi Guitar Master, LoG. 🙏🏻

I love this because I have written songs that I use all the chords in a progression except the 1.

A minor, being the relative minor of C major. Easier for pianists to grasp, but once you got it, helps so much in composition
