How to Add Pockets to Clothing

Here’s an easy way to add pockets to any clothing that has a side seam. (MOST of your clothes)

This was very helpful. I had to slow the video down and watch the part at the sewing machine over and over, but eventually I understood what was going on. For each half of the pocket, sew with the main garment part on top and the one panel of pocket underneath. Leave a bit of a gap at the top and bottom of the pocket. Then fold all the layers of fabric over (don't try to flatten the seam open) and sew together including the gap areas at the top and bottom of the pocket. I am glad to have watched this video -- 10 or 15 minutes of re-watching it over and over probably saved me a couple hours of mistakes at the machine with what would have been lots of seam-ripping!

I have searched and searched for instructions on how to add a pocket to RTW side seams. I hit dead ends everywhere until I went directly to YouTube. And there you are!!! Thank you so much for putting this up. You covered all my questions and I feel confident in trying to do this now.

You also can make any tshirt as a skirt with pockets. All you have to do is... Sew the opening of a long or short sleeve t-shirt. Then you'll put tshirt on just as if it was a regular skirt. Then place the sleeve that you've sown together on the inside as pockets. There you have a skirt w/pockets. #CoolIdea you can use any type of shirt.

This is so perfect for my needs. I just bought a pull over sweatshirt on clearance for $3 and got it home to realize it has no pockets. With this tutorial I'm confident I can add them in myself. Now to find the right fabric.
