On this Day / 13 March — Pericles Pantazis

On this day, March 13th 1849, the Greek painter Pericles Pantazis was born in Athens.

After graduating with honours from the School of Arts in Athens, where he studied under Nikephoros Lytras, he left for Munich, as did many young artists of the time, where he intended to continue his career. The conservative artistic milieu of the Bavarian capital, however, was ill-suited to his restless spirit, and he left for Paris, where he stayed for several months, discovering while there the art of the Impressionists, before finally settling in Brussels in 1872.

Pantazis became part of the creative life and avant-garde movements of Belgium. Influenced by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet and Édouard Manet, Pantazis created a pictorial world of his own with his expressive realistic portraits, his still lifes with their imaginative play of light and shadow and his atmospheric landscapes – impressionistic coastlines of Northern Europe and scenes inspired by his travels in the south of France and Athens.

He showed his work with success in numerous solo and group exhibitions. He was a founding member of the art societies La Chrysalide (1875), the Cercle des Aquarellistes et des Aquafortistes Belges (1883) and Les XX, which featured several of Pantazis’ works in its first exhibition, held at the start of 1884, opening just a week after the artist’s death at the age of 35 due to tuberculosis. Pantazis’ premature death ended his modernist investigations before they could find full expression. He nonetheless had time to leave a vivid mark of his boldness and potential.

Ο Έλληνας ζωγράφος Περικλής Πανταζής, γεννήθηκε σαν σήμερα, 13 Μαρτίου 1849, στην Αθήνα.

Μαθητής του Νικηφόρου Λύτρα στο Σχολείο των Τεχνών της Αθήνας, αποφοίτησε με άριστα και έφυγε (όπως οι περισσότεροι νεαροί Έλληνες καλλιτέχνες της εποχής) για το Μόναχο με σκοπό να συνεχίσει τη σταδιοδρομία του. Όμως ο συντηρητισμός της καλλιτεχνικής ατμόσφαιρας στη βαυαρική πρωτεύουσα δεν ικανοποίησε το ανήσυχο πνεύμα του, οπότε ταξίδευσε στο Παρίσι, όπου και διέμεινε λίγους μήνες ανακαλύπτοντας τα έργα των Ιμπρεσιονιστών, πριν καταλήξει στις Βρυξέλλες όπου και εγκαταστάθηκε το 1872.

Ο Πανταζής ενσωματώθηκε στην καλλιτεχνική ζωή και στα πρωτοποριακά κινήματα του Βελγίου. Επηρεασμένος από τον Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, τον Gustave Courbet και τον Édouard Manet, ο Πανταζής δημιούργησε τον προσωπικό ζωγραφικό του κόσμο μέσα από τις εκφραστικές ρεαλιστικές προσωπογραφίες του, τις γεμάτες ευφάνταστες φωτοσκιάσεις νεκρές φύσεις του και τα ατμοσφαιρικά τοπία του – ιμπρεσιονιστικές βορειοευρωπαϊκές ακτές ή απόψεις εμπνευσμένες από τα ταξίδια του στη νότια Γαλλία και στην Αθήνα.

Παρουσίασε με επιτυχία τα έργα του σε πολλές ατομικές και oμαδικές εκθέσεις. Υπήρξε ιδρυτικό μέλος του Κύκλου της Χρυσαλίδας (1875), του Κύκλου Υδατογράφων και Χαρακτών (1883) και του Κύκλου των Είκοσι, ο οποίος στην πρώτη έκθεσή του, στις αρχές του 1884, συμπεριέλαβε έργα του καλλιτέχνη που είχε αποβιώσει λίγες μέρες νωρίτερα σε ηλικία μόλις 35 ετών από φυματίωση. Ο πρόωρος θάνατος του Πανταζή εμπόδισε την ολοκλήρωση των νεωτεριστικών του αναζητήσεων. Ωστόσο πρόλαβε να αφήσει έντονο στίγμα της τόλμης και των δυνατοτήτων του.

Για την επέτειο των γενεθλίων του Περικλή Πανταζή, επιλέξαμε το έργο «Σύνθεση με Βάζα, Λουλούδια και Βεντάλια», λάδι σε μουσαμά από την Ελληνική Συλλογή της Λεβεντείου Πινακοθήκης.
