I don't mind that people like fair skin, but claiming fair skin is cleaner is a problem

As an Asian myself, there are people literally bleaching their skin and taking some tablets to become fairer.
The OBSESSION is crazy.

I'm laughing at the translations rn, the 乾淨 clean 溫柔gentle, so before anyone jumps to any conclusions, clean in this context means clear, like you can see the facial features of someone if they have a lighter toned skin, not clean as clean, dirty context, but as in clarity, hope this makes sense

The last lady hit the nail on the head. Even if people with darker skin tones are appreciated, it’s because they’re “unique” and “quirky” and not because dark skin is also seen as beautiful.

Just look at all of the "Whitening" or "Brightening" labels on many skin care/beauty products nowadays, not just in China, but also in many other Asian countries. This speaks volume about people's preference.

Fair skin was an indication of high socioeconomic status in ancestral times because those who were poor had to work outdoors doing manual labour whereas the rich spent most of their time inside. There's a reason so many Chinese people walk outside with umbrellas on a sunny day. Also, for men, it is perceived as less masculine for a guy to be pale and can be seen as unhealthy, but for the teenybopper boy band crowd (Chinese equivalent to K-pop), it might be more socially acceptable.

I find it really interesting that light-skinned guys are seen as feminine according to them. We can observe the same stereotype in the black community. I wonder if light skin men are seen that way worldwide.

Many Chinese like fair skin is not because western people have fair skin!
Its because of the TRADITIONAL CULTURE! But nowadays people like many kinds of skin colors and I like the first girl!❤

As people, we make life harder than it needs to be. Why do we have to make all these assumptions about a person based the color of someone’s skin? It’s unnecessary and ignorant.

What I’ve learned about beauty standards around the world is that most countries prefer fair/lighter skin

I was dumbfounded by the "clean and gentle" comment.

I’m Asian from America and I always hated getting tanned and didn’t understand people who purposefully get than. I just prefer my natural skin tone. I’m would not consider fair my Asian standards. I feel like when I get really tan that I can’t see my features as much

Dude, I stopped reading the subtitles and just listened to them talking. They have such a beautiful sounding language!

Lost in translation. “Fair/white skin is cleaner” or “fair/white skin is gentle” means it’s easier to clean. Less acne and oil problems. There’s a saying in China. “一白遮三丑” means if your skin is pale, you can cover up other shortcomings. This only applies to skin, not race. Don’t take to offend.

In Western culture, having dark skin (in terms of a tan) was considered undesirable bc it meant you were lower class. Now having a tan/darker skin is preferable bc it means you have the money for leisure/are athletic

100% true...in most of the Asian countries the fairer the skin the more beautiful they're considered. And yeah, as bad as it sounds in most of the Asian places fairer does represents cleaner. Since it used to represent that fair skinned PPL were usually royal or rich taking care of their skin, while darker skin symbolised that they worked hard in physical labours...and honestly even most of the older generation PPL (including my own relatives and parents) would consider an average looking girl with fair skin as beautiful while exceptionally beautiful girls with tanned skin would be called avg or below avg... Harsh reality 🖤
