Mouth breathing activates the Fight-Flight Response which tells your body you are under stress. Nose breathing promotes calmness and better sleep overall; gives your body a better chance to repair itself when not activated to fight or flight.

Use a cotton chin strap instead ... same benefits, easy on the face. Take a 1-inch strip of cloth, double it lengthways, and place it under your chin and over the top shelf of your head. When you have the length fixed with your fingers so that it is snug but not painful, measure the resulting length and tack the ends down by quick sewing (or velcro, if you're not sure about the right length.)

I have mild sleep apnea so I tried taping out after seeing this video. I've been taping my mouth at night for a couple of months and it seems to be improving the quality of my sleep. I wake up less often, stay in bed longer and get about an hour extra sleep and probably better quality sleep. I dream just about every night. Apnea wakes you up before you get into REM sleep where dreams occur and it had been a while since I remembered a dream.

Before starting I got my allergies under control with Flonase and practiced keeping breathing through my nose during the day. It was difficult at first due to congestion, but breathing through your nose actually helps clear up your nose (I learned that from Patrick McKeown's video) and it gradually got easier.

Yes it looks ha ha funny but it works. A heck of alot more convenient than a cpap mask. The comments below warning against this if you have apnea and allergies are wrong.

Unfortunately if your sinuses are clogged, it's harder to breathe through your nose. In the Spring that's especially true.

I use masking tape and it works just as well as the expensive tapes online. No more dry mouth or dry lips.

If you tape your mouth do you eventually not need to anymore? How long does it take to train yourself to sleep with your mouth closed on average? Any idea?

I tried this while watching the video and it feels like I do not get enough air through my nose. So every 5 normal breaths I have to take a deep breath.

You forgot the mention the hairs in the nose act as early warning sensors to keep spiders from crawling into your body at night. JK. The nose hairs help filter the air to reduce dust in the lungs.

I've learned to sleep with my mouth closed. It has decreased my stress and my long term injury has improved - I think because of diaphragmatic breathing.

I started to tape since watching your video and it has helped the tightness in my chest as well my sinuses are clear and I have more energy in the morning. My kids also started to do it too and feel like they have better concentration in school. We just started and I look forward to long term results. Thanks for this video.
