Making my stipend work: how I budget as a PhD student

I know every financial situation is different, but I have chosen to live a life in which I can make do with my stipend and still have leftover each month for my emergency fund and other fun stuff.

Nice video. Car insurance is quite cheap for you. I just finished my phd from UBC where the car insurance is super expensive and more so the rent. And all when the GRA was the same. So saving 40% from the salary like you are doing is impossible. Good insights though. Kudos to all PhD students who budget, sacrifice but live their dreams.

This was actually really helpful! I've been offered a funding package in the form of a GA position, guaranteed 4 years $20, 000 per academic year stipend plus health insurance. Pursuing my PhD in Sociology and aiming to have no debt as I paid off my student loans in full and don't want to go back.
