This just happened to me. They offered 20k below what we initially discussed. I stayed firm, gave them time to adjust, and they declined. I see it as a blessing from the Universe. Something better is out there for me.

The comment about them recognizing what you bring and find the money really resonated with me. I’m currently in the military and have watched my wife get a new job every time we move. Three times they have hired her even though they weren’t hiring and had no open spots. They just had to have her.

I had a position that was the lowest position in the company, but I received a more than expected for that position. So I worked three times harder then anyone else, Why? Because my Salary said. "We value you."

Probably one of the most informative and insightful videos on this topic that I’ve ever seen! Definitely far from average. I’ve got a call today, plan to use some of if not all these techniques. Thanks!

Great advice. The distinction between the 'discussion' and offer is really important. It's key for the candidate to get full line of sight to the full over before accepting or declining. A bonus or really great benefits, etc could fill the gap if the salary was too low.

I KNEW this! Thank you. Interviewing in several hours for a low-offer job that I am worth more...and I am gonna get more!
Post Interview Edit: Had a Super interview, Thanks Andy! I went in so encouraged b/ c of you.
We didn't discuss salary today, she is going to finish interviews. I will update end of March, and I will bring it up if offered the job.
I could tell Employer was truly hyped about me. I used your cover letter, resume, and interview techniques. She was straight-up surprised I knew about her company: "not many people look us up!"
Super videos, Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do Andy :)

I walked off a job i was supposed to start today their expectations were well above how much they “capped” at, i feel like i was lied to and just discouraged now. why companies ask for so much yet cant pay the right price

The job that I am interviewing for is not remote, and the commute is long and the cost of commuting is expensive. Should I discuss a possibility of working remotely 2-3 days a week before they offer me the job. Should I discuss this when I get a job offer.

Oof. Wish I would have seen this a few hours ago. I interviewed yesterday and was offered a position that was 1/3 less than what I wanted. HARD PASS. I guess I'll have to reiterate that I'm still here and not going anywhere when I send my thank you email tomorrow.
I never comment, but your videos are endlessly helpful. Thank you!

I had 2 interviews, went into final rounds and they didn’t mention salary. They had me Give them 3 references and submit my info for a background check (to the background check company) as it’s part of the selection process. Is this normal? Never had this happen to me in any sort of hiring process and it’s for a regional manager position for a small Dry cleaning company with locations in California and Minnesota.

Hey Andy. So I am interviewing currently and I followed all your coaching tips on the money talk - brushing it off first to continue talking to ensure it's a fit. Saying "i'm sure we can find a number that we can both be happy with if we're mutually interested in doing this."

He originally said 55k, then came up within minutes to 60k before i responded.
He acknowledged the market rate is 76k but that as a non-profit they can't do market.
Both interviews with the Director went well and we see eye-to-eye and their need is a perfect fit for what i do well and bring to the tabld.
They continue to come back that "60k is it. It was far above budget at 55k. We reached this far for you." (i have intel that says otherwise though... i know there's more budget)

60k is "ok" but I believe 65-70k is the correct number.

Stand my ground?

Thanks as always Andy!

What if the price is the final offer? After the interview, you get in written an offer for 'x' amount, which would be lower than what you want.

How about being told by the hiring manager you would be making a certain amount after hiring you working for four weeks just to find out they're paying you less than that. Now what?

I literally repeated what you said, the HR still ask me of the salary range multiple times. When I ask her just tell me what the position offers she says she’s asked to get my number.

A massive Texas based $33B company (Retail) offered 15% less than what I was a making prior to layoff (Oil and Gas industry). Negotiated thrice to match but they were not willing to negotiate. Therefore I declined. Also I had to move to another city within Texas.

Can I have some advice because i'm new to the workforce as a new graduate and I've never been in this situation before. During the interview screening they asked me about salary expectation and I provided a range and they said it's within their budget so it's good. After that I did the interview and I got the offer a week later. Now... with the offered salary it is $2000/yr less than the lowest bound of the range I mentioned during the interview screening. With the current offer, I think it's acceptable but not the most ideal. Because I don't really have extensive experience, I don't really know what to say during the counteroffer to highlight why I deserve more salary. In my mind I just thought this is not what we kinda agreed on initially. Do you think I should just take it because I'm a new graduate? or should I negotiate because it wasn't exactly what we've discussed in the interview and I think I deserve that $2000 with my degree and internship experience?
