Love this Madeline! I've hired tons of people, and I never mind people negotiating. Another reason that makes a lot of sense is "after looking at the total compensation package, I'd like to see if we can get the base salary up to X". Healthcare costs could be different, parking, whatever. And maybe nothing is different, but it's a gray area, and give you room to negotiate!

Thank you for your tips! I just tried negotiating a salary for a position at the same company I left a year ago, but who reached out to rehire me today. I was let down very politely. But I am glad that for the first time in my life, I tried negotiating.

Here is what I said to ease into the negotiating: "As I've interviewed other places, and seen the demand for someone in this role, I've seen that the range in the market is x to y hourly. Are the details of my base salary open for negotiation?"
