MicroNugget: How to Switch Between Installation Modes in Server 2012

In this video, Tim Warner covers the new ability in Windows Server 2012 to switch dynamically between several different installation modes. The default installation mode is Server Core, while the more traditional mode is based on a Graphical User Interface (GUI).

One of the main issues systems administrators ran into with Windows Server 2008 was the irreversible nature of an installation mode. If you started with a core installation, for example, the server was then committed to operating in this mode. Sysadmins had to learn quite a bit of command-line syntax just to get the server up and running. In Windows Server 2012, you can now set up the server using the GUI option, configure it the way you want, and then strip away the graphical interface and convert it to a core installation on the fly. This does require a reboot, but not a reinstall.
