In this video, Chris Ward covers preinstall tips for Lync 2013. He’ll talk about how important it is to have all of your tools in place before you begin the installation, including a PowerShell command and setup list that will save you a ton of research and painful lessons.

It’s easy to rush into an installation, only to find out that you could have saved yourself a lot of trouble if you’d executed a few crucial preinstallation preparations. Chris will discuss some of the most important concepts you should consider before kicking off an installation.

Some of the basic steps include using a planning tool and preparing Active Directory for Lync. You’ll hear about the importance of setting up a topology beforehand, including Sites, Pools, Edge, and Conferencing, then publishing that topology.

You’ll want to set up DNS SRV records before you deploy a front-end server, then install a local configuration store. Don’t forget to request certificates and assign them appropriately. Last but not least, you need to start ALL of your Lync Server Services to ensure they’re working.
