You Probably SHOULDN'T Be Growing FRUIT TREES From Seed: Here's Why!

This video addresses why you probably SHOULDN'T be growing fruit trees from seed and discusses the #1 source of confusion I see with new gardeners. We discuss hybrid crosses VS open pollinated / heirloom varieties, growing from seed VS propagating cuttings, and what a named cultivar of a fruit tree or vegetable is.

Why do we grow some fruit trees and vegetables from seed? Why do we propagate some things by rooting cuttings? Why do we graft fruit trees? What seed can we save? What is hybrid seed? What is open pollinated seed? What is a self-fertile fruit tree or self-fertile vegetable? What are named varieties? How are named varieties of fruit trees and vegetables made? We discuss ALL this in this video!

I need everyone's help to make the information in this video reach as many people as possible, because it's a common source of confusion. You can help do that by hitting the Like button, leaving a comment and sharing it wherever possible. Thank you all for watching!

Satsumas aren't identical to the parent plant when grown from seed, but they do grow mandarins that are basically true to type because mandarins are not a hybrid, they are one of the original citruses used to create hybrid citrus like oranges, Meyer lemons, etc. Your information is otherwise bang-on. For people that want a specific fruit cultivar dependably and early then grafted plants and cuttings are best. For the rest of us, the hobby growers, there are seeds. I grow from seed because I see it as a journey or story with an unwritten ending. My trees double as ornamentals before they begin to fruit so there's never any shortage of fulfillment or joy regardless of the ending.

I appreciate the effort you put into the production of each and every video. It hasn't gone unnoticed. Make sure Dale keeps picking your new fig varieties and you can't go wrong. I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

I used to have a wild apple in garden. Taste is 10 times stronger then ordinary supermarket apples, and smaller approx 1/4 size of supermarket apples. My mum made apple pie - no need for sugar or lemon. There were little water in them so you don't have to press water out. I am growing apple tree from seed and hopping it is wild apple I will get ☺️

I grew lots of pumpkins from 1 grocery pumpkin. They may not have become olympic champions. But they did win the regional tournaments. Good enough for me to enjoy gardening and growing my own food. I made pumpkin soup which was the best soup i ever had. Simply because i made it myself.

This is really one of the best (i.e., most informative) YouTube video's I've watched. It explained so much that before, was always a nebulous and confusing topic. This video makes it easily understandable; thank you.

You could do another video on why you probably SHOULD be growing fruit trees from seed!
And perhaps cover things such as; reasons why to grow from seed (diversity, to suit you area, etc), how to best avoid 'GMO' seeds/plants and avoid mutations etc from tissue-cultured plants (seed source, parent plant selection, hand-pollination, etc), a rough estimate of numbers you may need and tips/ideas on arranging a spot to grow them and so on....
Some people may decide to grow a named variety as well if they have the space.
Growing from seed is an important thing to do especially these days as many new and some old 'varieties' are "somaclonal mutants". Selections of "somaclonal variation" - mutations which happen in vitro. Synthetic hormones, radiation and other methods may also be used. These kinds of new 'varieties' and even some older ones may have been weakened from various chems, radiation, etc and may have developed disease, or may have been contaminated with transgenes, which can all happen during tissue-culture processes and in the environment - Worth noting before choosing parent plants. And also good to know when choosing a named variety.

My husband bought an avocado tree from who knows where ( he was trying to make me happy)🥳 however, we never got a fruit. It was 2 stories high and we did our research so I know we did everything correctly. But, never a fruit.
It was killed in the Texas winter storm but came back. I now use the leaves to wrap chicken in to bake it and I will be making a tea with the leaves tomorrow.
I think someone scammed my husband and it was probably someone that grew a small tree from a 50 cent avocado. Lol!
Yes, avocado were 50 cents at the time.
I still love that tree though and hope it grows 2 stories high again as it makes a beautiful sound by my kitchen window when it’s windy. Thanks for your info and good luck on your fig project! Oh, our beautiful fig tree and huge tangerine 🍊 tree died in that snow storm as well.
But, keep on growing everyone! 💜
Edit: You are a smart young man and I have been subbed for a while but never comment. Just had to compliment you and Dale! 🐶🥰🐶

YouTube is full of videos about growing a fruit tree from a seed that don't say the harsh truth you told. So, I hope your video becomes viral.

Very well stated. I'm not saying I never tried to grow an avocado pit, but only expected an interesting houseplant. All that aside, isn't it totally easier to buy the p li ant you want?

Good video don't know if I agree with you. Definitely some good points most farms here in South Africa plant different varieties on different blocks so theres very little cross pollination. I been growing a lot of trees from seed the wait sucks but in most cases the fruit is good. Yes they are different from the fruit that was eaten but not widely different. I told myself if I got bad fruit I would just top work the trees but a yet to get a fruit thats bad. Plus genetic diversity is being lost by us having the same fruits all over the world. A home tree even if its sub standard fruit will beat out most store fruits just cuz its allowed to ripen on the tree. Love the video I understand there people who have limited space and can risk the gamble of seedling trees or just dont have the time to wait 3 to 15 years.

I really enjoyed this video. It cleared up a lot for me. I just started planting by seed (grocery store) so I guess those will just become house plants since their fruiting future seems glim:)

I have watched a lot of your videos and they are always well informed. This is the first video cleared up unanswered questions for me about seeds. Thanks for the great information.

while i get the point you make (it's valid for most people)... Imagine if more people took the chance to just plant and let plants cross. I planted over 100 Meyers lemon seeds from my tree this past winter and spent 5 years growing/testing inground Citrus in DFW. of those 100 seedlings planted.. i left them neglected and ended up with about 10 robust seedlings remaining. I'm interested in developing seedlings that do well in our environment by testing the survival of the fittest... afterward, I'll see what we get. it's exciting!

Good stuff. I’m still going to try though and see what happens-can’t hurt. Thanks for the info 💚

Thank you, you've just made me realize that the tomato seeds I planted won't taste the same as the fruit I took them from .

Once again, great video. Good explanation, comparison of the difference between seedling, cross pollinated, open pollinated and selective pollination of fruit trees. Good analogies as well. I have learned a lot from you and put it in practice in my own garden.

Thank you for this video. I knew this to be the case, but I didn’t know why. This was very informative. I’ve growing an apple tree from seed for fun. I’m curious to see what I end up with.

All my fruit trees are grafted because of this. I have planted a few fruit tree seeds, including an avocado just to see how they would do though. It's fun to experiment.
