You don’t need a greenhouse or lots of space to grow tomatoes! #growingtomatoes

There are SO many benefits to growing your own tomatoes (and other veggies of course!) 🍅

Keys ones for me - It’s fun, grow varieties you never knew existed (black, pink, striped!!), they’re so much tastier than shop bought and they could save you some money in the long run (depending how many you grow!).

I sow indoors late Feb/March time and plant outside in May once all risk of frost has passed.

I grow most of mine in these 43 litre tubs (I do also use smaller pots!) filled with compost in Harrogate, North Yorkshire 🇬🇧

Before planting I mix in some chicken manure pellets or blood fish and bone powder as they’re more easily available to me than cow or horse manure. I very occasionally feed with Tomorite when they’re fruiting.

Some say you should never reuse tomato compost. I do!! There are lots of worms in these tubs and they keep it a lovely consistency. I top up with an inch of new compost every year!

You will get a better, earlier crop in a greenhouse or polytunnel however personally, I prefer growing them outside as I can water less and I save my greenhouse space for other plants like melons and cucumbers. They’re more at risk of a disease called blight outside though, so be aware of the signs! 🦠

I remove the bottom few branches and leaves as they grow to allow lots of airflow and help prevent the blight. I do remove some side shoots however not all, and they grow nice and bushy with tons of fruit!

Let me know if you have any other questions and please do save if this has been helpful ☺️
