Way back in the ‘80s, I planted a garden, had some cabbage plants in the mix. When I cut off the cabbage heads, they re-sprouted from the root and made Brussel sprouts. I was amazed.

You can eat the leaves too. The stems are too woody, but the type I grew, we would dry out the stems and use them as stakes for the next years garden.

I grew brussels sprouts for the first time last season and was shocked to see them pop back up on my garden this year as I had cut them all at the soil level and didnt know they would come back from the root. I also was disappointed last season because I wanted to seed save but didnt get any seeds. Well once they started popping up on their own this season I decided to google it and learned that they live two years and produce seeds in their second year. Sure enough, I just collected my first set of seed pods! Im looking forward to getting more sprouts too!

For those wondering: wild mustard was the origin plant

There’s no need to cut the whole plant down. Harvest brussels sprouts from the bottom up as they grow. They can be twisted right off without using a knife. The plant will continue to grow taller and produce more.

Freshly grown Brussels sprouts have a better taste than frozen or store bought …once you spoil yourself with the taste of fresh ones you can’t go back to the store bought ones

If you pluck the sprouts off from the bottom as they mature, there is no need to cut the stem. The plant will produce sprouts through autumn and mild winters. When a severe frost is forecast, dig up the plant with the roots and hang them in storage. This helps keep the sproats longer.

a couple more tips: you can just twist or cut off individual sprouts as you need them and leave the rest on the plant so that they don't go bad. also frost makes brassicas (which brussels sprouts are a part of) less bitter and more tender, so if you live in a region where you get frost, waiting until it happens can make the sprouts taste better.

In Germany they don't cut them down. They just cut the sprouts as they mature and leave the plant to grow and produce more sprouts

Hi Kevin, I’m not sure if you know but the leaves from the brussels sprout plant are so nutritious. I add them to any smoothie or sauté them with some garlic. Great video Sabrina

Heard a story about a noob gardener who was growing Brussel sprouts for the first time, and they looked like these ones. She was complaining to her neighbor that she didn’t have any sprouts on them and was considering pulling the plants out. The neighbor, older gardening woman, was flabbergasted and said “THOSE ARE FULL OF SPROUTS!” Went into the garden and pulled back the leaves, the noob gardener didn’t know that that was how the sprouts are grown!

To be fair, Brussel sprouts and asparagus grow like they are trying to convince an idiot that this is how they actually grow.

I hated brussel sprouts growing up, but I hate them steamed or boiled. Roasted is the only way to go for me.

I have about 5 plants growing right now so the timing of this video is on point. I had no idea that they would regrow if I leave the stalk. I believe that is what he did when I think about it. 🤔 He cut the top portion off but not did not pull the plant out by the roots. Wow, thanks for this information!
