Uhhh not sure I completely agree with this. I woukd rather try leveling/ lowering out your mix (like maybe having your listening source such as studio monitors or headphones turned low then lower the volume of other channels such as drums, vocals etc and around lead). NO LIMTER OR ANY VST ON THE MASTER CHAIN. Maybe experiment with a light amount of compression to your lead channel. If it sounds good quite when you turn up the volume from your listening source it will come through amazing.

I would consider balancing the volume, compressing or saturating the lead first.
