I wish you an amazing time in Germany. It’s true - us Germans can seem cold at the beginning but when they get to know you, you will have Friends for life!

Finding somebody to trust: Bring your girl to a German Kindergarten or try to find a private "Krabbelgruppe" (that is a group of women with babies of similar age that keep meeting in order to have their kids play together). That helps with learning German as well. One of the other women may have a daughter old enough to do the babysitting. Will probably not work before more people are vaccinated. So it would be helpful as well to be vaccinated against covid

Have a great start in Germany! Hope you get acquainted with everything here quickly - certainly not easy during a pandemic. But you will make it.

the german diphtong "ei" is pronounced like the english "i" .."Ei" as "standalone" respectively the term "Ei" also means "egg" by the way
"ie" is pronounced like the english double "e" = "ee" which is a bit longer than just pronoucing the english "e" respectively in german "i" ..."ie" is also called in german "the long i" because the "e" of "ie" is silent respectively not pronounced.

It´s "W-ei-den" and not "W-ie-den"
The beauty of the german vowels and diphtongs and umlauts is that they are always pronounced the same way which isn´t the case for english vowels.

When you live in a small town area you definitively need a least basic german skills = "A1 level" to make your life way more easy and comfortable for the avarage things of Life like going shopping or visiting a restaurant for instance..you will notice especially while shopping things are a bit different than in the US and you will have to ask people how certain things are working (thinking of handling deposit bottles for instance called "Pfand Flaschen")....you don´t need to be perfect in grammar or pronunciation ...alone the affort to speak german is very highly appreciated by the people and will make social interactions way more easy going, because you will notice that Germans compared to US citizens are way more reserved to strangers, and it doesn´t matter if that is a foreigner or a unknown German, it is simply a cultural habit...therefore every little affort to speak german will help immensely to break that barrier of being reserved while interacting with Germans.

And don´t forget to make your driving licence valid as soon as possible..(contact "ADAC" that is the agency who does that) your american driving licence is just valid for a short period of time (6 months)..and depending in which US state you made it, it can be that you have to make a further small licence test as well which will take extra time (meaning getting an appointment + some small lessons about german traffic + test)....just saying so that you can prepare in time for all contingencies...getting caught with an unvalid driving licence is very expensive, you definitively don´t want that..just saying.

Weiden: German "ei" ist always pronounced as in "Einstein". "Ei" also means egg, so, that is your first german word.

Welcome from Hamburg. Hopefully the lockdown will be over soon, so you can experience Germany and Europe again.

Snow was pretty rare during the last 10 or so winters in Germany, except obviously in the mountains. But this winter was exceptional in many instances. Extremely low temperatures, some extreme snowfall in certain regions.

So get used to fairly cold, wet, drizzly, grey weather in the winter.
Somewhat warm, but not overly warm clothes are in order, but water proofing is much more in demand than warmth.
Layering is the way to go; so you can shed clothing as demanded when you go inside, or if there is a sudden warm spell outside.

But the spring and summer months can be truely magical in Germany. Spring blossoms coming out in a burst that is surprising to many people.

When it comes to playgrounds in Germany, the quality can vary a lot. But there are some truely amazing playgrounds in Germany. Swings and slides are not optional, they are almost mandatory. Wooden climbing and balancing racks are everywhere, often interconnected by rope and log bridges.
But get used to German parents totally unconcernedly allowing their kids to climb a ten foot tall wooden tower with a swirly slide going down it - all by themselves. Often not even sending them a glance. Sand pits below these climbing gears make falls very safe. Allowing kids to gather their own experiences makes kids so much more confident in their own abilities.

Edit: Recently I found an amazing comparisson between the USA and Germany.
In the USA distance is measured in a road trip of several days, in Germany in kilometers distance above 300 km.
In the USA history is measured in decades, in Germany centuries.
Both are considered long in their respective views.
