The blood sacrifices in the Old Testament seem barbaric to modern audiences. But why is blood so important to God? Our friend Chip Bennett tackles this question in a recent episode of “Ask Me Anything”.

"Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission for sins." Somebody has to DIE for sins.. My sins are covered in Christ. I've settled out of court.

What is the significance of blood? (elaboration below)

A sinful act, or an evil act, leaves behind damages that cannot be left alone. If a person murders someone, the damages will be that the family lost an important person. If a person is assaulted, they receive physical and mental damage. If a person accidentally crashed into another person's car, the car is broken and needs repairing.

Damages like these cannot be left alone and need to be taken care of by punishment and payment. Sin's damages on this world and on people are countless.

God's standard of morality is literal perfection. So, any form of evil will be punished, and we are punished by death. "The wages of sin is death". Wages are what you earn for work. What you earn for sinning is death. It's what you will get and deserve.

Blood is used for atonement because the wages of sin is death, and Life is in the blood. So, what is atonement? It is, by definition, "the action of making amends for a wrong or injury". To make amends is to compensate/make up for wrongdoing.

Animal blood sacrifices of the past is a form of temporary atonement, where sins were forgiven at the cost of a life, not of our own, but of the sacrifice. The sacrifice is a substitution for us. It's like when we commit a sin, the animal's blood temporarily covers us up. But it won't last forever.

But the blood sacrifices eventually lead to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, where it's a permanent transaction. Jesus paid our fine and served the sentence for us with His own blood. We were supposed to die but Jesus died for us instead. It's something we don't deserve, but out of His love for us, He did it anyways.

So if you believe and trust in Jesus and what He has done for you, and sincerely turn away from evil deeds, you will be a new creation. A new creation where despite still living in a physical sinful body, you have a renewed spirit that the Holy Spirit will reside in you to guide you as a Born-Again Christian

One sin corrupted all of mankind and the whole world with it. We minimize and normalize it because we don't really understand true holiness and righteousness. Even knowing it took the Son of God to pay for our sins with His life, we don't fully comprehend the true impact of sin and its consequences. It's far worse than we make it out to be.

Blood covenants were known and understood in the Middle East, in contrast to today in the West. Blood Sacrifices were memorial events to reaffirm a commitment to that covenant. They were not payments to appease an angry God. In fact, flour was also allowed as a sin sacrifice (Leviticus 5:11-12). The sin offerings were often combined with other offerings like food and drink that were pleasing to God. What we see is not God getting paid, but a bigger version of what was a social practice of reconciliation involving a meal and everyone enjoying the benefits and blessings that came from having a healthy relationship with God. The entire event was involved, not simply a procedure to appease an angry God.
To read more about this, look for the book entitled “Atonement and Reconciliation.”

This puts into perspective how courageous and loving Jesus was really. He knew he was going to be laid down for us. He knew this is what our Father needed of him. Its the respect Jesus deserves thats so incredible..I almost don't have the words for it.

Please explain why blood was required for thanks offerings as well, then.

An orthodox Jew told me Judaism had always understood the requirements of the blood sacrifices were spiritual and metaphorical in nature by quoting king David. It was Psalm 51 iirc. "For You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; You take no pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise"

I always found it rather inspiring how Messianic Christian Jews can expand on those ancient sacrifices metaphorically and end up explaining the gospel found in the NT.

This is a question that I have wrestled with for some time and I felt like the guy did not definitively answered the question. This is where I have landed on this question, No God did not require blood and here is why I believe so.

Within the Hebrew tradition, the practice of blood sacrifices and offerings held significant importance, as delineated in the Book of Leviticus. These rituals served as a means of atonement and reconciliation between the Israelites and God, embodying their devotion and repentance.

It's essential to understand that the requirement for blood sacrifices and offerings did not originate from an inherent demand within God's nature but rather from the cultural and religious context of the time. God accommodated the Israelites' practices, meeting them within their understanding and establishing a covenant relationship based on their beliefs.

The Book of Hebrews has an important biblical account that contrasts Abel and Cain's sacrifices. Hebrews 11:4 explains how Abel's offering was accepted because of his faith, but Cain's was not, demonstrating the significance of the heart's disposition in worship.

Furthermore, the New Testament, notably Hebrews, focuses on Jesus Christ as the final sacrifice. Hebrews 9:11-14 explains how, through his sacrificial death, Jesus fulfilled and exceeded the necessity for animal offerings, providing redemption for humans.

Thus, while blood sacrifices and offerings were integral to the Hebrew sacrificial system, they should be comprehended within the broader theological framework of God's accommodation and the ultimate fulfilment found in Christ.

Even physical life requires death. Whether you eat a plant or an animal - IT has to die for your life to be sustained. I've had this thought for a time now but haven't really developed it much.

NO ONE WILL CARRY THE SINS OF ANOTHER - that would be unjust and God is never unjust!

Ezekiel 18:20-2-21
The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.

But if the wicked do repent for all his sins which he hath committed, and keep all my commandments, and do judgment, and justice, living he shall live, and shall not die.

The first time blood is mentioned is when the Blood of Abel cried out from the ground ( soaquim elay min ha adamah ) the cry for revenge. Showing us that the price of man life requires an recompense. Something that we cannot offer as Life is in the hands of the giver of life.
Only God's perfect life 🙏 could satisfy the demand of life for a life, only God's forgiveness can redeem the heart of men bent on destroying life and all the qualities that make life sacred. Thank you Jesus for your mercy ❤

Life is in the blood.... he don't want you to be a sacrifice like a slaughtered lamb, but to sacrifice your own understanding and turn to him instead, so he can work through you and make your dreams come true ❤

Hey Frank! Totally not about this video, but I really want to find the video/podcast I listened to from you (can't remember which) where you talked about sanctification, and how you can hinder or even stop that process. You can change you justification, but can stop you sanctification is what you said. I always tell my sister's in Christ this, and now my friend wants to listen to the video where I heard it and I CANNOT remember. Was it a college campus talk? Can you point me anywhere? Thanks, brother!

but it seems that God never desired sacrifice in the first place.

"You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.” (Psalm 51:16)

"Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’” (Matthew 9:13).

Well, because Yaweh is an ancient, brutal (made up) deity who acts like a monster. The old/New Testaments are a dark fairytale.

“Why did God (as an all powerful all good divine being) want heinous and barbaric atrocities to be an exclusive admission of conviction and devotion himself?”

“Well that’s simple! Because the people were as ignorant and retrograde as he was!”
