HOMEMADE DOG FOOD | HEALTHY DOG FOOD RECIPE
We recently switched our 4-year-old dog over from store-bought dog food to homemade dog food and Charlie could not be happier.

This is a great, well-rounded beginner recipe that is easy to make and can easily be scaled up and stored in the freezer. I really enjoy making fresh food for Charlie and hope to share more recipes soon!

Do you cook for your pets? I would love to hear from you in the comments below! Feel free to share all of your questions and tips.

INGREDIENTS & PRODUCTS USED + MENTIONED:

HOMEMADE DOG FOOD RECIPE:
1 tablespoon coconut oil
1 pound ground turkey
1 large zucchini shredded
1 cup baby spinach finely chopped
1 cup shredded carrots
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1 egg
3 cups cooked rice (I like using frozen brown rice)

Heat a large skillet or pot over medium-high heat. Add in the coconut oil and turkey and sauté until it is browned and cooked through, about 10 minutes.

Reduce the heat to medium and stir in the zucchini, spinach, carrots, and turmeric. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.

Turn off the heat and crack in the egg. Let the egg cook in the hot food, mix it around to ensure it is mixed through and cooked through.

Stir in the rice until everything is well combined. Cool and serve!

NOTES
*Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Makes 6-7 cups.

*This is a vet-approved dog food recipe but please note that I am not a licensed veterinarian, and all opinions are my own. Please consult with your veterinarian before switching your dog to a homemade diet.

I lost my dog two years ago from cancer. I have thought for a long time now that dog food, like human food, is far too processed. I have just got a delightful puppy recently and I am going start making her home-cooked food. Thank you.

If that's how your dog food looks I can't only imagine what a people meal looks like, your family is lucky to have you. Awesome thank you for this because I love my dogs.

our housekeeper has been cooking for our 3 dogs for years. None of them have ever eaten store bought kibbles. we cook chicken breasts, chicken liver, sweet potatoes, then juice carrots, spinach and kale. (much healthier than cooked, and adds moisture as it is juiced). add rice, mix the whole thing up. We make 30 lbs at a time once per week. thanks for the tip on the turmeric, i will give it a try.

Update - I made this for my three doggos, and they gobbled it up. They were on strike and didn’t want to touch their Costco kibble anymore. So I’m mixing this with the kibble, and they loved it and look so happy now. 😄Can’t thank you enough, thanks for the recipe! It’s so healthy!

I really appreciated your YouTube channel because I just adopted a 15 month old English pointer with Pyrenees and my wife passed away in August of 2023. And this dog is my soulmate and I want him healthy and happy. He’s so amazing. I thought I want to be able to feed my dog the food 5:21 that I would eat myself and not dog food that you buying a bag. It’s just him and I.

I made this for my puppy who actually turned one today and he LOVED it! One of the first things I noticed is that his poops aren't nearly as stinky and he has even more energy! He went back to his bowl 4-5 times to lick it clean. I am giving up the store bought food for this and I bought a homemade dog food cook book yesterday on Amazon. Thank you for this easy, healthy recipe :)

My dog wasn’t feeling good and had diarrhea. I made this recipe and she was feeling much better in just a few days. Thank you so much for teaching me how to cook for my dog. For years I made fun of people who did this but I am now a believer!

Love your dog food. I live in Thailand and we always cook dog food for our dogs. Normally, we give them rice, meat (like chicken or pork liver), and veggies. We also often give them our leftovers like eggs, vegetables, soup, milk.)

Thanks Dani! I'll definitely make it. I've been cooking homemade food and let me tell you, my other dog's bloodwork improved so much just with healthy food! My former Vet was shocked. Food is medicine for sure. Can't wait to see your dog treat video too! Charlie is adorable and kissable!

Cooking for my puppy has gotten her health back since she had parvo and almost passed away. It took me 3 days of no sleep and round the clock care to keep her alive but now I see the importance of a puppies/ adult dogs health!

I know that you posted this article 3 years ago and I'm not sure if you're still watching to see if anybody replies, but I'll give it a try. Something that I do with my dog's food is I use whole chicken pieces like Bone and breasts or a combination of breasts and thighs. I'm getting ready to make a batch tomorrow and the boneless skinless chicken breast price was too good to pass up. So that's what he's getting in this next batch. I cooked them in my instant pot pressure cooker with celery and carrots. I put about a cup of water in the instant pot but when it's done cooking it's got a lot more because of what has come out of the chicken. I then turn around and use that exact same water to cook the Jasmine rice that I use. That way I'm not losing any nutrition from anything that has cooked in the instant pot. Just thought I'd share!

I LOVE this! I don't have a dog, but I have always said to my friends who do have them, that it has to be so boring for dogs to eat the same things everyday. I think this could be a great series for the channel. 🐶 🐕 🥕

I love this and believe that an entire channel devoted to homemade dog food is a good option, it is so needed. I love your regular channel, I have recently gone KETO and any recipe ideas that you have for the keto diet are most appreciated. Love your healthy, vibrant and positive energy!

Yes more recipes please! I've started making our 13 year Beagle/Bassett food about 6 months ago. She loves it. I cook our brown rice in the instant pot and the rest on the stove.

I relate to all these answers. Both my cavaliers died around 8 years old.Far too young and both so deeply loved and missed. Then I looked at what they had eaten. All commercial dog food has the warning:Dog food only:Unfit for human consumption. Finally the penny dropped. Why did I feed them food that was unsafe for me?So when I get my new cavalier puppy I will cook all her food. She will only eat food that I can eat.We tend to believe what manufacturers tell us.But, just as with our children, convenience comes at a price to their health.Dogs deserve healthy, tasty, real food, as unprocessed as possible. In the long run you will save on vet bills and have a happier dog.

Yes yes yes. Cooking for my 🐶 🐶 is a perfect thing to encourage myself to eat better. Thank you please continue this, even if you need to make a special channel for it.

Dani it’s great you’re encouraging people to cook for their dogs instead of buying kibble. However, that is way too much rice (carbs), could use more eggs or add raw eggs at feeding time. Salmon oil can also be added. Garlic is not toxic to dogs unless given in high quantities. Reason for dog food recall years ago.
I would add organ meat and a few other things. Dr. Becker is an amazing resource. I do not cook my dog food. It’s ground up and frozen, thawed and fed. Never had an issue.
