How to setup an FTP Server in Windows using IIS

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard protocol for moving files from one computer to another across the Internet. The files are stored on a server computer, which runs FTP server software. Remote computers can then connect using FTP and read files from the server or copy files to the server. An FTP server is similar to an HTTP server (that is, a Web server) in that you can communicate with it using an Internet protocol. However, an FTP server does not run Web pages; it only sends and receives files from remote computers.

You can configure Internet Information Services (IIS) to function as an FTP server. This allows other computers to connect to the server and copy files to and from the server. For example, you might configure IIS to act as an FTP server if you are hosting Web sites on your computer and you want to allow remote users to connect to your computer and copy their files to the server.

You can also use XLight FTP Server Free, it's quite easy to use, but if you don't want to download any program, you can IIS. Thanks for the video!

Great video, however, got stuck at the "Add FTP Site". Under "Bindings and SSL Settings" page, under SSL you selected 'Allow SSL', then clicked on Next with no problem. My PC with Windows 8.1Pro gives me a pop-up when I click the Next button stating, "SSL Requires a Certificate". Won't let me move forward with out either turning SSL off or entering an SSL certificate. Not sure why this is different on your video. Also, the part on accessing your IP address was quickly glanced over. The IP you used was not on the CMD screen you brought up. Any help appreciated. This is my first time setting this up. Please forgive my ignorance.

yes you can access anywhere in the world, as long as your server is running. So might be good idea to run this on a old computer and make it act as a server. That way you can leave it running all the time.

During the part where you enter the username for read and write permissions, you must use a dash (-) for spaces. If you get a LONG list of "stuff" when checking the permission, it is because the user name wasn't entered correctly.

you want to make server open to the public?

I didn't know Windows had an FTP server. To completely decouple your server from Windows users you can always use free "FileZilla Server", which is available for all OS (98-xp-seven). Port forwarding isn't as easy. You will have to define the public IP inside the server as well as a port range for data connections. Give at least 500 ports. If you copy many small files, you may run out of the ports before old ones expire. Make sure the range doesn't overlap with other services (like torrent) Then you will have to forward them all and the control port to your server.

How to set up ftp server on my computer so I can access it over the internet from any other computer?

Stupid question - Im only just learning about servers and recently set up a server'03 box to handle my DNS & DHCP networking [a daunting task if you just dive right into it without knowing too much about it ^^] so, would this FTP interfere or conflict with my '03 machine if it is set up on a windows 7 workstation that gets the dns & dhcp from the server??

Great video...I do have an issue, but it is not covered...nor pertinent really. I have a mac client and a 7 server. I can access my FTP fine via anonymous authentication, but when I enable basic, type my UN and PW in, it will not let me have access. Thoughts?

Great video, but where did you add the permissions to use the site outside of your network? I have done everything and am able to see the ftp inside the network but can't reach it using my real IP. Was it a firefox browser download?

Now could you make a video show both how to configure for remote access and demonstrating actually doing so.

I've tried using password but it doesn't work. I put in the password for the account on windows but says wrong password or username. I have added the Username to authorization. Doing this on Windows 10. However will change to Windows 95 later
