Maegor really was his mother’s son. I mean almost as hard as she was. His cruelty set him apart. His mother did things out of necessity not for the sole sake of punishment

this guy's the embodiment of "violence isn't the answer, it's the question. the answer is yes"

Maegor is one of my favorite Targaryens. Absolutely love his story of doing right by house targaryen and descent into further madness. His mysterious death was also really interesting. He was also only guy to wield both Blackfyre and Dark Sister and ride Balerion.

Maegor said "your lining gotta be on point to be a madman."

I knew this man was descending into madness after I read in Fire & Blood that he had his own 15 year old nephew tortured to death for 9 days straight to learn of his Mother’s whereabouts…but he never knew.

Visenya and Maegor are probably my favorite Targaryens. They have such complex characters that I hope are explored more in later works.

Maegor is literally Aegon and Visenya fused into one person with a tad of Madness.

My own head canon thinks he probably saw how all the lesser lords of the realm politically maneuvered his father into benefiting them, so he grew distrustful of everyone.
Its probably a very similar story as Tywin except with dragons and the most power to wield as possible

Westeros would've been in trouble if his line had continued

HBO can make can make a fortune with a 1 season miniseries of all these lore stories. Especially with George Martin heavily involved.

Ironically without Maegor we would still have religious lunatics having their own army. He was a hero for the whole dynasty as a whole and allowed it to survive much longer than it would have

I think Maegor was inspired partially by Selim I of the Ottoman Empire. Also known as "Selim The Grim". Why "The Grim"? Because he used to grim a lot and rarely smiled...(perhaps George also added that character to Stannis and Tywin while he is at it). He used to kill his advisors regularly that some of his advisors used to wonder who might end up next. Up to the point they brought it up to him and he replied...and I paraphrase...."I haven't decided yet who amongst you will die...but I will let you know".

When fighting the Safavid Persian Empire, he send a dress to the Shah Ismail the founder of the Safavids and told him "Put on this dress and sit amongst women, or come and face me like a Man"...again paraphrasing here. And Selim just did assembled an army and fought and won his Battle against the Safavid.

Or maybe I am wrong about who is Maegor was inspired by?

Definitely my favorite Targaryen. Love this dude. 10/10 would pledge aligiance to him, even if he'd probably kill me after.

Maegor is the best Targaryen King in history. He saved the dynasty

One thing I find fascinating about the sons of Aegon I is that they both appear to have been failed versions of their mothers.

Aenys and Rhaenys were both creatures of the court and lovers of the arts. The latter however was more than capable of hopping on her dragon to lay waste to her enemies even if she likely did not have as high a kill count as her siblings.

Maegor and Visenya were both warriors to the bone. Visenya, unlike Maegor however demonstrated that diplomacy was not a foreign concept as demonstrated by her “conquest” of the Vale. Granted that was textbook Big Stick diplomacy but it still shows she was not a one trick pony like her son.

*Found mysteriously dead on the Iron Throne.*
And nobody saw nothing, not even the faceless men, the paid off Kingsguard, the paid off city watch, the cooks, maids, and jester all wiping off their daggers. The guy was that hated.

Maekar Targaryen was a Maegor lite edition without the damage sustained by combat and child loss. A stern strong ruler, without the cruelty. Although I think Maegor wasn´t always evil. After the trial by 7 he had to be revived and every time someone is revived in got they lose something.
