I've tried doing this and in the program its perfect! But as soon as i go to export it, the knockout seems to disappear. I'm exporting to SVG so is there a particular setting I need to enable? Any help would be much appreciated.

The knockou opacity is a useful tool, but the way Adobe implemented into illustrator is a total UX nightmare. It is always a guessing trial and error. No matter how many times I've worked with it, I always have to refer to a tutorial like this to accomplish the task.
