I’ve had three bunion surgeries and will need another in the next several months. On my second surgery, I had two temporary pins inserted in my big toe to stabilize the joint. I wear very comfortable, supportive footwear. I know you aren’t fond of Birkenstocks, Marie, but they are one of the few shoes I can wear without pain. I do get the metallic ones that look somewhat better. I have worn Aetrex and Finn Comfort. I cannot wear the Finns as much because they have a small heel. The best sandals for me are still the Birkenstock Arizona. Shoes and bras are the two clothing items where I feel that comfort is the most important feature. I so appreciate your tips and the opportunity to interact with others regarding this all-too-common problem.

Thank you Marie Anne! I think most nurses have bunions or Plantar Fascia problems. We aren't wearing heels, but the long hours of standing on concrete get us. I would also recommend a nice foot soak in hot water and Epsom salt at the end of the work day. 😊

Thank you for the useful exercises! They are simple and easy to do and remember. And it is also useful to walk barefoot!

I have a massive bunion on both feet thanks to genetics and years in pointe shoes. Fortunately, I also have ligament laxity so little to no pain. I mostly wear flats but am able to wear to occasional heel for special occasions without any discomfort. Sandals, however, are something else. I have to find the perfect style which allows the bunions to be free from any straps cutting into that part of the foot. While I continue to take and teach ballet classes (which includes a lot of foot articulation), I no longer subject my feet to pointe shoes also known as pretty pink foot coffins! The exercises you so wonderfully posted are accomplished in ballet classes, especially at the barre. They are so wonderful to keep pain at bay. Thank you for sharing. hope your feet stay healthy and hope you do not have too much pain or discomfort associated with the bunions.

These are awesome! I've suffered about 20 years. 10 years ago a podiatrist told me they weren't that bad, but I hate them. Can't wait to try the exercises! 💖

Best video ever! I suffer from a number of issues with my feet and have an irregular gait. One knee was out of alignment and pained for 30 years. As pain became more difficult to endure, I was able to have a total knee replacement at 60. Worked wonderfully but years of incorrect alignment has given me flat feet, very pronounced bunions, hammer toes, arthritis in my toes which has them going in different directions at each joint, high instep, and narrow heels. Well, you did ask about our foot issues! So even though I like to dress nicely, my shoes often bring down the outfit. However, even though limited by pain, I am still able to walk and am so thankful for that. More recent shoe styles which are soft topped help as well. Thank you for all the tips and good advice, I will make good use of the exercises. Very well presented.

Years ago, an upbeat female coworker told me that when your feet hurt -- your whole- body hurts. So, I'm glad that you have a leg up (or rather a foot up) on this situation.

All the more reason to wear your dreadful Birkenstock ❤
They truly help your feet.
Also, Birkenstock makes orthotic inserts. They fit into most shoes and no one will ever know. Your feet and back will thank you.😊

Oh thank you Ms. MarieAnne,
Thank You for the toe and foot exercises!!! Excellent.
I’m going to share this video with myself so as to remember what you’ve just shared. T’was really great information. ❤❤❤❤love

Lots of useful information there, Marianne. My bunion surgery was a waste of time. 15 years on and the big toe is back to a 30⁰ angle 😏 the bunion itself doesn't hurt but the angle of the big toe impacts on the other toes which does create discomfort. I'm going to have a go at those exercises. Thank you♥️

I had killer bunions during my whole career, when I had to wear corporate-appropriate shoes. I never even wore anything higher than a 2.5-inch, mid-heel, or any pointed toes, I just couldn’t find anything that fit better. Even finding any mid-heeled styles at all was very difficult. But, here’s the good thing: bunions will go away on their own, if we switch to shoes with slightly wider fits for daily wear. I don’t consider this problem “our fault”, it’s because shoe makers skimp on the width to save money on the leather! (They claim this is to make them look daintier and feet look smaller). This is also why they keep pushing pointed-toe styles, which are halfway around or less than the width my toes actually are (I’m a C width). Most make A width, but claim they’re B width. Average width, however is a C to D, there’s just no way those vey narrow shoes are going to fit the majority of women properly. After I retired, I noticed my bunions were already reducing in pain, redness and size after a year or so, and after five to six years, they were completely gone. I’m mostly at home alone these days, so I wear my Birkies (for warm weather) or my Steggmann wool clogs (for cool weather), both are natural-width and extremely comfy and supportive. But, these are my house shoes, when I go out, I do love my mid-heeled shoes or boots, but limit wearing them to once or twice a week for a few hours at a time. I love that sneakers are worn so much now, too, but I’m a dress/skirt gal and don’t like sneaks with my dresses/skirts on petite me. Vote with your wallets, ladies! If we only buy comfy shoes, that’s all brands will make because nothing else will sell. Men don’t put up with uncomfortable footwear or apparel, so why do we? Pulchritude isn’t everything, we have to be able to walk comfortably.

I have a bunion on one of my feet from an injury that I did nothing about. 🙃 Thank you for these great exercise suggestions! I have switched a lot of my shoes to the more open toe base. We really like Xero brand shoes, they are great for people with bunions. I have been using toe separators for a few months and find it greatly alleviates my pain. I can wear them on my toes inside socks and my Xero tennis shoes, and they say it helps if you can walk with them on. I do that each day for about an hour. I look forward to adding these exercises for additional relief! - Michelle

Thank you so much for this video! I already do exercises for my bunions, and I also do massage where I gently coax my big toe into correct place. That has kept my bunions in check and even improved the condition. I will be adding the exercises you recommend!
