How Beginner/Seniors Should Do Squats

Bob and Brad demonstrate how beginners or seniors shoulder do squats.

Bob (the tall one) has been diagnosed with Ataxia. It affects his balance and his speech, but does not affect his thinking. We appreciate your understanding and support!

Oh, thank you for showing the stick thingy. I’ve been doing squats off a chair and didn’t know how important the posture was. 🙄

My son has encouraged me to do squats with a kettle. I’ve been using it as a doorstop, lol.
I did notice I got stronger really quickly when I was doing them.
I should start doing them again.
. Thank you Bob and Brad for showing us easier ways to do them.

I'm not a beginner or a senior. I'm 47 and worked at a gym before the pandemic hit. I was certified as a personal trainer. But I moved, got COVID, gained weight, and quit working out. So, now this video is for me, too. Except that I already know how.

But doing squats without hurting my knees is something I will have to do very carefully now. And my strength is much less, so I will be starting slow.

PS, don't let your knees move forward past your toes. That will create a shearing force that will damage your knees. Keep the knees at or behind the toes as well as keeping your spine straight.

We also coached people to tighten their abdomen and lift their chest first before squatting. That helps to keep the spine straight and firm. And it prepares you to do the squat holding weight down the road. If you plan to use weights later, definitely learn to do it without weight but with the abdomen tight and the chest lifted first.

And you can also learn by using the chair or the box as a goal. Think about aiming for the chair or box with your bum. That improves posture, too.

Squats really are an excellent excercise if done right. I'm glad Bob and Brad showed this one today.

Your third exercise is the one my physio had me doing to recover from my hip revision (hip replacement replacement). Helped my sore lower back too. It looks easier than it is. Thanks for showing these gentlemen.

You can also do them with feet slightly apart. Or farther apart

thanks bob and brad. can i add, the chair being placed there also provides opportunity for a rest/regain of strength AND i note the chair in your video has ARMS thereby offering that crucial aid to pushing back up with the hands/arm-strength into the standing position. there are lots of mobility type aids with metal frames that could be placed either side of the person whilst they were doing the air bench exercise.
