*Kale drops the "Snap" emote when killed. You don't miss out on that quest line associated with him.*

The first merchant you encounter asks you not to harm any of his kind. So unfortunately I just don’t have the heart to betray him like that.

Merchant: I haven’t eaten in days, please buy something.

Broomstick Gaming: *and I took that personally.*

These guys are way too friendly for me to even think of hurting them. Especially given they sit in the most out of the way locations possible but always act surprised that it's been so long since they had a customer.

No way I could kill them
Seeing them is just refreshing, one of the few things who won't kill you on sight
It's a great feeling seeing that little bonfire in the dark or hear their music while being chased by everything
Just warms my heart
I'd rather have emotions in a game than optimise everything, you only play this game in blind run once :)

Imagine being the kind of person who could just casually slaughter Santa Claus.

I remember strolling trough lower Nokron and getting sniped, electrocuted, beat to a pulp and sniped. I was exploring this place and noticed some nice but sad sounding music. Upon closer look it was a merchant and I felt happy somehow seeing a friendly face in all this misery.

I explicitly remember hearing, "if you see anymore of my kin, please trade with them". Not "erase my lineage".

The Bell Bearing Hunter is unrelated to killing merchant's. He'll appear even if the merchant is alive, you just gotta wait until night, then use the campfire again.

Honestly it's hilariously wholesome to see how many people refuse to kill the merchants and I'm on their side 😂

As convenient as this would be, I just don't have the heart to go thru with it.

I remember early game buying something from a merchant that told me he really needs the money to feed his family. And it wasn't like I had many runes to spend, but still I felt like he could need them more than I do. How would I kill such a nice, innocent dude?

With the new update, your don’t have to remember where each merchant is anymore! Still a tedious chore to travel place to place just to pick up an item every now and then but a nice addition nonetheless

I actually prefer the immersion of having these merchants alive and at their locations, would be nice to have a one stop shop but I cant shake the idea of not seeing more friendly people alive in the game

“Please buy something, I’m so hungry”… Bro, I felt so bad I damn near took a second job to help feed a NPC. You think I’m gonna murder them all?

I love that FromSoft makes their games so immersive that they don't have to have an actual downside to massacring useful NPCs, all they have to do is make you feel bad about it.

Counterpoint; Most of these merchants have very few items that you'll need to make more than one return trip for, and then usually only if you didn't have the runes on-hand when you found them. The items that they do sell that you would come back for tend to be simple consumables that aren't so important that you need them all the time (and you can always stock up and have some in your storage), but which can be useful to buy from them "in the field" without having to return to a site of grace and respawn enemies. Also, they are now automatically marked on the map, making finding them even easier than before.

Kale's the homie, not gonna happen.

I’ve encountered the Bell Bearing Hunter without killing ANY merchants. Just incase people are wanting to fight him, you don’t need to murder them to fight him.

The bell bearing hunters’ armour description also mentions that they hunt merchants for their bells
