Many people wonder if they should be counting calories on keto. Find out if you need to start counting your calories in this video.

1:38 Calories and a ketogenic diet
2:30 Intermittent fasting
2:52 Counting calories on keto

In this video, we’re going to discuss calorie counting on keto. People often wonder if calories matter on a ketogenic diet, and sometimes they do. It all depends!

The types of calories that you consume are what determine if you will gain weight. Not all calories are treated equally by the endocrine system, so they all affect hormones like insulin, cortisol, and growth hormone differently.

Carbohydrates trigger insulin and are used solely as fuel in the body. Protein can also trigger insulin if it’s consumed in large amounts. Lean protein causes a greater spike in insulin than fattier cuts of meat.

Protein is used for fuel but also to replace and rebuild muscles, hair, nails, and skin. Fat has the least effect on insulin. Similar to protein, fat is used for both energy and for tissues in the body including the brain, nerve tissue, and cell membranes.

If you’re on a ketogenic diet you should be consuming minimal calories from carbohydrates, a moderate amount of calories from protein, and a high amount of calories from fat.

There are some situations where you will need to count calories on a keto diet. For example, If you want to lose weight, but you have a slow metabolism, a thyroid problem, trouble sleeping, high stress, or you’re menopausal, you’ll want to lower your calories from fat.

You’ll need to consume more fat in the beginning while your body adapts to ketosis, then you can lower the calories from fat to increase weight loss. If you’re consuming too much dietary fat, you won’t burn your own body fat, even if you’re in ketosis.

Combining keto with intermittent fasting can also help to increase weight loss. Gradually going from 2 meals to 1 boosts weight loss, even if you have a slow metabolism.

You opened this perfectly. Nobody wants to accept that calories from a storage/usage perspective is ARE NOT equal because they physiologically influence your endocrine/hormone system. I'm so tired of specialists, doctors, and scientists stating conflicting perspectives without indicating their perspective or recognizing physiological effects. This video was refreshing for this reason.

I did keto in 2017 with much success. I lost 82lbs lbs in 9 months, zero exercise. I was 27 then and still had my gallbladder and appendix then. I've had 2 more kids since then ( total of 6🙂) I'm now 33 and gained it all back. I have been keto since December and lost only lost 6 lbs. I just dont know why it's not working for me anymore 😭 I was dxed pre-diabetic last week and a gluten intolerance do I'll keep up low carb/keto and hope for the best.

It's funny though how the LCHF community is constantly bashing on Calories, Caloric control, -reduction and how bad of a tool everything Calorie is to lose weight. And at the same time - the optimal goal on LCHF/Keto is to lower eating frequency to one meal per day (or even less than that). And if that's not Calorie Restriction in its highest form, then I don't know what is! Only difference is that here we're dressing it up as "Fasting" and suddenly it's the healthiest thing ever. And I agree - cutting calories in these huge amounts; there's nothing more effective for weight loss!

Once your in Ketosis what should your macros be? How much fat should you eat if you want your body to consume its own fat?

It amazes me how often this question gets asked, mostly by people who wish to delude themselves into thinking that they have stumbled upon a dietary method that requires no discipline. Of course calories matter. The basic laws of physics still apply. The ketogenic diet - or any diet for that matter - does not give one license to eat in extreme excess of ones caloric needs, and somehow magically not gain weight. What the ketogenic diet does, when practiced consistently and for a certain length of time, is change ones hormonal environment (i.e. reverse insulin resistance), to where one naturally reduces calories without having to deliberately count every calorie. However, if one eats significantly past satiety one can easily exceed ones caloric limit, and gain weight - even on keto.

Some people are under the false impression that keto gives them carte blanche to eat as many calories as they want, with impunity, because they are able to lose weight initially, without consciously tracking every calorie. The reason this occurs, initially, is because of the diuretic effect of the diet, the slight metabolic advantage the diet has (i.e. the increased caloric burn due to the thermic effect of digesting more protein) and the higher level of fat intake causes one to reach satiety faster, and therefore the fledgling keto dieter spontaneously reduces calories without awareness of it. However, there will come a point, depending on when you reach your plateau, where you will have to monitor your food quantity. In summary keto does not negate the laws of thermodynamics. It is just the most efficient means by which to get you to conform to those laws, through using food to change your internal hormone levels.

Before trying the Agoge diet, I tried keto and many other diets but none worked. With the Agoge diet, I lost so much persistent belly fat, finally getting that fit look.

So after your in keto say 6 months. (Adapted)
Your in shape, just a little around the lower ab/love handles.

How do you loose the rest of the fat while gaining muscle?

How much fat and protein do you eat at that point?

Ive been explaining this for years to keto gurus, only to be told im wrong, lol, thanks for clarification Dr. BERG, enough fat to get rolling, then reduce to use stored fat for fuel.
