We've never seen a fall-off like this in NFL history! The San Francisco 49ers traded up to select Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, giving up two first-rounders. Lance was supposed to be the future of the franchise, but after just two starts and an injury, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys for a 4th-round pick. Now, after leading all players in multiple categories during the preseason, it seems like Trey Lance might only be destined for a backup role. How did it go wrong so fast?

He had 323 passing yards on 67% completion percentage and 91 rushing yards. The interceptions were bad, but he did produce a lot.

There was no fall off if you looked at his play and ignored the media hype. He had 1 great year playing FCS football. There was never a reason to believe that he would be great. He can be a great backup/bridge qb in the league for the next decade. But the idea that he was going to be a franchise cornerstone was never shown on the field. Only spoken about in the media.

Zach Wilson was #2 overall pick in that draft. Dude was hated by fans and teammates his entire career there. Now he's a 3rd string qb after being traded for a 4th round pick. No one has fallen off harder than that.

Trey Lance still has promise but we can’t judge him based off of few regular season starts when he is largely unknown, raw and his confidence is likely shot! People who assume he’s a bust or done are too narrow minded tbh when we don’t know how good he is or can be

Trey Lance still has promise. He ain’t gonna be a HOF or a top 5 qb, but he can still be good.

He didn’t play a lot of football before coming to the nfl this preseason he did a great job he is going to struggle early he won’t get better until he constantly get playing time

What's even crazier is that if you watched him in college he really was a good QB. Zero picks his last year with i think like 35 total TDs give or take and he was accurate and showed an ability to go through his progressions really well. He looked like a pure passer.

He did do pretty good in preseason but his timing and those Interceptions man falls under pressure quick but their can be potential . DC ⭐️

The fact he hasn't played against a real nfl defense and getting hated on for 5 picks ... im not saying that's a good thing but let get the rust off

Carson wentz really made all eyes on Trey Lance 😂

Carson was an experiment that worked from a small school. They hit on that mysteriously but I didn’t feel anything near that when Trey was being drafted.

We've seen it happen to plenty of high draft picks.

Ja’Marcus Russell never made it to year 4 so one would think he fell off the most.

At least the cowboys let him have some reps and not restrict him. But yes, he needs another year or two.
