I was expecting a picture of Rick Astley inside the 3rd one at least! :)

Maybe they never had any modules in them - i.e. they had project boxes pre-wired and ready to accept the electronics and then the project was scrapped. Probably chopped the cables because it's not safe if someone picked it out of the dumpster and plugged it in with the unterminated wires flapping around inside.

My theory: Somewhere, they re-did the ceiling lights. The old lights were connected via these plugs and the new ones should be attached to the sting modules. The sting modules may be only available with the power plug connections so they bought them and took the modules out of the cases. They screwed the cases back together to have the option of re-assembling and sell them in case they were not needed anymore. But later, they decided, that the stings will remain in the ceiling so they cut off the cables from the modules and old plugs and scrapped everything.

The crimpy thingy you were looking for was maybe a ferrule?

Dave being flabbergasted why someone wasted time to screwed the lid back on. ... Then suggests to dive in the dumpster and do a tally on how many that were.

Someone was probably so pissed that they wasted more time by putting them back together.
I'd grab a few. Free cases for projects.

On the plus side you could get yourself a shed load of free project boxes.

500MHz TEK scopes, but the company shall remain nameless ;)

Now you're going to have to go through the whole lot (with a torch, shone from behind) to see if there is one that has the guts still in it. Also, I wonder if other people in the building watch your vids and go "hahahaha that was from us, lol" to your many dumpster diving escapades. Do any of them actually talk to you and mention you found their stuff, or is your place one of the ones where no one talks to people that are not from within their own companies.

This was part of a Plugwise Zigbee energy management system. Page 25 of Plugwise's manual for this system has a statement about the environment:
"Old electrical and electronic devices often contain
valuable materials. Therefore, never dispose of discarded devices as normal household rubbish. Hand the device
in to a local authority collection point for electrical and
electronic devices." Ergo, the innards were of no further use to them, and they were removed to remain in compliance with their own standards. As for screwing the boxes back together, they did that to drive Dave nuts.

Dave FFMPEG might be able to extract the raw video data from your MP4 files and put them into a compatible container WITHOUT RE-ENCODING (i.e. losslessly). And if it works it would be really fast (well orders of magnitude faster than re-encoding).

9:00 - I just learned today, way back in the days of 2" videotape. They would record a show using 2 VTRs in case one broke down. When broadcasting, they'd sync up the VTRs and immediately switch to the other in case the primary one failed. You're in good, retro company, Dave!

Maybe they know Dave is looking in the dumpsters and trolling him 🤔

Just from the thumbnail I assumed this was big Clive... I wondered how he’d gotten the power supply so fast 😂

Back in a former life, I used to test telephones for fcc and eia/tia compliance, but as they were often pre-production and not label for usage, twice a year, we would have to go through storage and clear them out...but the fun part was that we would have to destroy them. This involved driving a large cold-chisel through them...a great day for stress relief.

Regarding Blackmagic ATEM, with which I've been working for a few years: I've had issues with output files produced by some of the older models. It turned out that my ATEMs have been saving all the audio channels, even the empty ones from unplugged inputs. This resulted in files with 32 channel audio, which was incompatibile with my software. I had to switch to Premiere to work directly with those output files. Maybe something similar is going on with your mp4s. While addressing some other problems I've also learned that Blackmagic support team is very helpful (albeit sometimes slow), so you should give them a call or mail.

An interesting example of minimalist circuit design.

I've thrown away some dangerous electronics and I purposefully damaged them beyond use, just in case someone got their hands on it and decided to plug it in.
