I wonder if the businesses in your building look for old stuff to dump and take an internal office vote to see what they'll leave for "our local eevblog bloke" then watch teardowns of their old office equipment at some monthly office party bash.

Dells won't charge from an HP cord. There's a 1wire communications to a chip that if it doesn't detect the correct Dell chip with the wattage, it goes into slow mode and refuses to charge but will boot.

Surprisingly clean laptop -- hardly any wear visible on the keyboard. The space bar often starts showing wear after just a few weeks of use.

I scored a very nice i3 HP laptop in the e-waste bins at my local dump some time back. Immaculate condition. Upgraded memory to 8GB, installed a SSD, bought a new battery. Runs Windows 10 perfectly!

The sata interposer is $9 on eBay if you are lucky, very typical of the period for Dell.

You can get them connectors on eBay for a couple of quid. I’ve actually got one spare but I’m in the UK. Just plugs into the sata port on the ssd / hdd and then slots into the laptop pins.

You could probably just install an mSATA in that WWAN-port next to the WiFi card. Standard port, and you won't have to look around eBay for an hdd caddy for this particular machine. Also, you need to use a Dell charger. Dell laptops refuses to charge at all with HP chargers, even though the plug is exactly the same - the same vice a versa HP laptops won't charge with a Dell charger. They will however power on, as you see.

FYI - win 10 20H2 will now install direct using the win 7 key. No need to install win 7, update the win 7, then upgrade to win 10.

The alternating blue and red flashing battery led indicates the battery has failed. That’s probably why it was tossed as not worth repairing if it’s nearing it’s time to be replaced.

The laptop has an MSATA slot next to the wifi adapter, so you can pop a compatible SSD right in there without buying the Dell SATA adapter.

Sometimes 'in theory' you can put a better CPU in the same socket, but with a lot of lower end big box motherboards they do not have sufficient power regulation for the wattages as well as BIOS support for the cpu. You are usually good to put anything on a ASUS board. I have an acer one here with a i5 650 and I'd like to put a i7 on it but nah, no voyage.

it is a pain when the caddy / adapter gets dumped with the HDD, has this with a couple of laptops ive bought without hdds in the past

Use the msata or esata or USB (for live CD version of Linux). Ocz ssd.. I have a few of those and remember losing all the money i invested in their shares some years ago!

Wonder what the monthly rent is for that "dumpster" studio space. Where do the dumpster props come from? The dumpster studio is pretty realistic, but I'm not fooled, just too much "hidden" treasure!
