Russia's war on Ukraine has created fears of a global food crisis.
The two countries supply a third of the world's wheat, and are major exporters of barley, corn and sunflower oil.
Fighting has disrupted exports, leading to record prices.
Many countries in the Middle East and Africa depend on importing wheat from Russia and Ukraine.
So, will the higher prices put global food security at risk?

Presenter: Folly Bah Thibault

Guests:

Patrick Mardini - Economist, Leadenhall International for Market Solutions.

David Laborde Debucquet - Senior Research Fellow, International Food Policy Research Institute.

Daragh McDowell - Geopolitical Risk Consultant.

Where were the Western media when Ukraine was shelling Donbass for 8 years? >13, 000 people died. Is this normal?

Countries that aren't food independent should be worried for their own starvation.

United States (US) call it "Liberation" instead of "Invasion". That was what US call it in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia and the list goes on... Why the double standard? Confused... Please enlighten. Genuine question...

Instances of the United States "liberated" or overthrowing, or attempting to overthrow, a foreign government since the Second World War. (* indicates successful ouster of a government)

Unfortunately, it appears that Russia will be embargoed. Alternative food sources and substitutes should be immediately discussed . The Russian-Ukraine war is a lose-lose situation for the entire world.

Excellent report...Food riots will bring down governments. A hungry man is an angry man, in my view. The Ukraine war has far-reachiing consequences that world leaders failed to see. Even the FAO and UN did not talk about the food crisis that will arise from a War.

Canada needs to step up and provide the world with these resources that Russia refuses or is unable to provide. We already sell 30% of the world's potash. 10% of the world's proven oil reserves. We can do more with the political will..

The world should learn from this conflict that you should never rely on other countries for your energy and foods needs to feed your own population. It's a wake call!!

Definately. Several countries suffer food shortages and prices will sky rocket. Already fuel prices have sky rocketed and this war will make the things worse.

Lets keep grain prices in perspective. In the 1970's one bushel of wheat bought one barrel of oil. Now the ratio is more like 12 bushels of wheat to one barrel of oil. The price has not kept up with inflation and farmers are suffering. Here in Canada, farmers are switching to other crops because the price of wheat is not high enough to cover cost. The prevalence of crop disease is increasing which increases cost and risk to the farmer (if the fraction of diseased crop is more than 3%, the crop has no economic value and the farmer loses the value of seed, fertilizer, fuel and equipment). Farmers use fungicides to control crop disease, but the fungi evolve resistance in 4-5 years. It takes an average of 14 years of R&D to develop new fungicides. Humanity is losing the war against crop disease. Governments are not investing enough in agricultural R&D. My lab has been researching methods to combat crop disease since 2000. The world is right to be alarmed at the loss of Ukrainian and Russian wheat. The closing stocks amount to only a few weeks of consumption. A famine is likely. On a somewhat cheerier note, soil moisture is very good in Canada this year and we will have a larger than average crop.
