Ukraine's Invasion of Russia, What's the Objective?

Ukrainian army brigades invaded onto Russian soil into Kursk Oblast for the first time in history. They quickly started fighting in 11 separate villages in an incursion. Stryker Armored vehicles were deployed. Early reports indicate this was a force of at least 1,000 soldiers; more than 11 main battle tanks and 20 armored combat vehicles. We will also examine the offensive campaign into the Donbas region. The electrical power attacks. The mobilization and conscription as well. They pushed up the R200 highway connecting Ukraine to Kursk Oblast in Russia. They’ve advanced at least 10km although unconfirmed reports claim as far as 30km as of Thursday August 8th.

I like how everyone forgets that WW2 on the soviet side wasn't just Russia fighting, Ukrainians have as much credit for it, proportionally

Sun Tsu said to attack where they're weak, and defend where they're strong. You don't win by attacking into the teeth of their best and well defended spot. This is why the Blitzkrieg thru the Ardennes was a thing. You don't attack France thru the thickest part of the Maginot Line.

It's not an "invasion", it's a Special Military Operation

Not a military analyst, just a guy who reads history books, but I’m surprised no one is considering that this could be a Heraclian gambit. Rather than go after the entrenched occupying forces on seized Byzantine territory Heraclius conducted maneuver warfare in enemy territory with the intention of destabilizing the Sassanid regime by increasing the perceived cost of the war to the aristocratic class that underpinned the King’s power and either weakening or toppling the King from within. Eventually his strategy paid off and Khosrow the Second was toppled by an internal coup. In subsequent negotiations with weaker regimes Heraclius was able to recover all the lost Byzantine territories. An attempt to weaken Putin’s standing with the Russian elite seems like at least a plausible explanation for the Ukrainian offensive into Kursk.

The problem with the monitoring station is that it is an international certified one, so the data from the station is used by Russia to send invoices to European customers. Now Russia cannot do that, unless they measure how much gas they pumped themselves. However, that's like installing your own natural gas meter in your house and telling your provider that your gas meter shows you only used half the gas you usually do. This is a solvable issues, but it puts political pressure on Russia right where it hurts.

There is a common story about how when Ukrainian troops asked their German trainers how to deal with mines, they were told to "go around them." I'm not sure how truthful this story is, but Ukraine definitely went around the fortified areas alright.

Small correction: at 4:55, the Ukrainian soldier says that the strategic OBJECT (site/infrastructure) of the metering station is captured. Chris interpreted that as the strategic OBJECTIVE when trying to explain what the Ukrainians were trying to do strategically. Great video. Always good to see Chris's take on this war. Thanks as always.

I love how upset the Russian government is about this. They're actually acting like kids. "It's not fair! They're not allowed to fight back! This is a provocation!"

Also, I love how every single day, the duma have stated that they have stopped the invasion - and every day the Ukrainian army gets deeper into Russian territory.

This is the longest video of yours I've ever seen, and somehow it doesn't seem long enough. Great briefing. Thanks Cappy.

The more bizarre part of the gas pipeline is not that it's running through Ukraine and that it has been unaffected by the war but the fact that Russian government controlled Gasprom company that owns the pipeline has been diligently paying Ukraine for the transit of gas to Europe. One can tell that this oddly uninterrupted Russian-Ukrainian gas transit deal has been contributing to Ukrainian annual budget. So, yes, in an odd and round about way, Russia is helping fund Ukrainian war effort against Russia lol. It goes to show that big money transcends the war and will continue to conduct its business despite the hostilities. I doubt Ukrainians will do anything to the gas pipe - that pipe is dear to both Russians and Ukrainians.

Russia being able to move freely around Ukraine while Ukraine not being able to freely go after their supply lines has been a big reason Russia could supply their southern lines so well. Giving Ukraine freedom to fight on equal playing ground is game changing. Russia’s been able to say “I’m out of bounds! No tagsies!” for 2 years now. Now there’s no out of bounds.
