YouTube has a monetization problem.

YouTube has a monetization problem. And a feature removal problem. It seems pretty obvious to solve, yet they seem unwilling. What gives?
This video breaks down Twitch supporters versus YouTube supporters and why I think there's such a disparity.

I've been a YouTube Premium user for years and this is the first I've ever heard of the free channel membership promotion. WTF, YouTube?

"Youtube has a Youtube Problem" - Jim Sterling. Years go by, and it seems nothing changes

Good points... YouTube keeps re-inventing their platform, and most of the time 99% of the audience has no idea what those changes are or how to use them. By the time they figure them out... they drop the feature.

I don't want to be this guy, but for me it's just another sign that youtube isn't interested in "small creators"
Youtube wants so desperately to be like cable tv and I don't know why.

YouTube's focus is putting money in THEIR pockets. They seem to forgot that without us, there is no them.

I watch 99% of my YouTube content on the Apple TV app. With that delivery method the ways to interact and support the creator are even more limited. I had to go to my iPhone to enter this comment. The Apple TV app really needs updating.

I have given hundreds$ to creators on Twitch. I haven't given a dime to a Youtube creator.
I hate using Patreon because it's a constant obligation I have to manage. Twitch is so easy to give a small one time donation like $5 to a creator and the creator knows about and appreciates the donation right away.

First off, I'm a huge fan of your channel, you're one of the few 'Tuber's I actually watch just about everything from, thanks for the awesome stuff man. For me personally, I never even bothered to really look at membership on youtube for example, because I already had a well established and robust thing going on on Patreon, and it just uh, felt weird, to try and do both. I think to your point with YT, that's got to be a huge issue for them with this, all these monetization options that people have spent years solving by other mean, can youtube really expect people to jump ship when they finally launch a product? Idunno. Lots of thoughts on the rest tooI guess but too much for a comment. Keep making the awesome stuff though!

-edit By the way! I had NO idea how notifications on community posts were working or weighted, thanks for that one!

I definitely didn't know I could have had a free subscription with youtube premium. Never even saw a news article about it.

Youtube going more and more on the "Downward Spiral"

Completely agree re: eliminating closed caption contributions due to "lack of use" is baffling when it's so challenging to access

I think there's this culture around super chatting or tipping on twitch, that traditional support just doesn't have. Giving money to a streamer is this kind of exciting thing that younger kids have seen all their friends do. Whereas signing up to someone's patreon just doesn't have the same level of pageantry I think. At least this is the best I can figure.

YouTube has always frustrated me with the weird "implement this then take it away" thing. So many things I use all the time get removed. Not to mention as a power user myself I find myself adding more and more Chrome extensions and userscripts to get back some of that functionality and that's becoming difficult to manage. *sigh*

I think a massive part of why stream donations are more popular is the instant gratification and direct validation from the creator.
And unlike the pre-baked nature of VoDs, the audience can actually influence and be part of the content of a stream.

Sounds like YT is making it harder and harder to become monetized. I was almost at my first $100 threshold to get paid when they raised the bar to 1k subs/4k hours viewed in a 12 month period. For some it's easy to get to that first 1k, but my growth has been slower. I'm gonna keep trying due to enjoying the creative process, but it is a bit ridic. I'm paying for everything at the moment.

4:10 Why would this argument hold up at all? Tips are 100% taxable, and a really easy way to get audited.

I think I tried to use a free membership with YouTube premium and it didn’t work. I think channel members can also get exclusive videos, yes?

YouTube is my #3 funding source right now. It's soon to be #4. While I don't receive the most money from YouTube, my business model is still 100% dependent on getting content watched on YouTube.
