"Stop using external drives" costs around $200 for a 10TB+
"Use NAS!" Costs $700+
Obviously most people don't got the money or they'd have one already.

External hard drive : $200
Nas : $13, 000
There's a reason people use external hard drives

yeah okay, that's nice and all, but NOT EVERYONE CAN AFFORD IT SO THAT'S WHY WE USE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES!

No question having a NAS is great when it works - but I wish people would stop making it sound super easy to use. It isn't a plug and play device, it is a mini server - and you have to learn how to use it. It has it's own operating system. You really have to learn how to use it and if you work with team remotely they also need to learn a bit about how to use it. We have one so our team can connect to our movie and work remotely without paying a fortune in cloud storage. Most of the time it's great and it just works BUT there is a big learning curve - at least twice a year I think I'm going to have a nervous breakdown trying to upgrade or update settings. Right now I'm a week in to a "simple" drive upgrade which has turned into the tech experience from hell. Would I still get a NAS if I knew what I know now.... probably. But I also would have been a lot more cautious about how I set it up, and been prepared for the extra stress it brought.

You cant just tell peeps that is called raid, for there are 8 different types of raid, each one serving a different function, your mirrored disk setup is raid 1

"Stop using external hdd. Start using 6 external hdd". Come on they're still external hdd. Just in RAID. 😂

Just remember RAID is NOT a backup. Backup your shit!

Looking at all these comments about "you don't need a NAS or it's to expensive", well after I got to 10 different hard drives and 15TB of information, I knew buying another external hard drive wasn't the way to go. I bought a NAS. The best decision I've made in years!

Good luck finding the money to set all this up!

Literally don't do any of this. Its not needed in most cases. Cloud storage isn't as secure as you think and at any moment they can clear out the cloud for any reason (Read the TOS) or end the service entirely and they don't have to tell you either

Still need to back up a NAS.
Usually with a local external HD or another off-site NAS.
Preferably BOTH !

What’s the point of owning a personal hard drive than if the cloud is just somebody else’s hard drive

Nice. But kind of expensive. External drives will work too. You just have to have a backup of each external drive. Catch them when they’re on sale.

shit man i will, if i have the freaking money 😂

One more option is to set harddisk type MBR. To GPT. And GPT type is more efficient and riskless option for data recovery

I will stop if I have the money to buy and maintain this device. But for now.. external hdd it is.

"...as long as I have an internet connection..." external drives don't require an internet connection...just sayin'.

Thank you for all the rich guy tips. It really helps out in my humble set up.

Good luck with hardware failures, power peaks, ransomeware. You need external drives for backups.

Definitely for backup (esp if your backup set is larger than a single disk). But for the media you’re editing on maybe not. It’s slower and more complex. Those trade offs are mostly worth it if you have multiple users that need to access the same filesystem.
