Surface Pro 8 by Microsoft
A 2-in-1 that actually works as one of the best tablets and one of the best laptops, all in 1

DESIGN
Carbon fiber keyboard is stiffer
Removable SSD like pro X
Two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports
And a headphone jack
Battery life is 7-8 hrs (meh)

DISPLAY
New display has thinner bezels and a 2880 x 1920 display
13” display is almost an inch bigger than before
120Hz!! (may be dynamic eventually)
There are still bezels, but they are not bad (hidden and grippable)

CAMERA TEST
The dual far field microphones
5MP front facing 1080p
rear camera shoots 4k

PEN
has a haptic motor
You can feel the haptics in some apps but not others. It is clearly something being added into Windows afterwards.
Different handwriting fields for different apps
Never just allowed to write in text boxes
Haptics work in mouse navigation
Haptics work in snips and handwriting
Haptics DO NOT work in whiteboard… which is a shortcut on the pen
Easily charged in the case
Slim but easy to hold and comfortable
Erase with the back in an intuitive fashion

KEYBOARD (sound)

INTERNALS
Intel i7 11th gen G series chip is fast
Geekbench score: 19498 (beats Galaxy Book Pro 360)
16GB RAM
Windows 11 feels more like it was meant for a 2-in-1 and this is the most powerful and well executed 2-in-1 on the market. This is a laptop first, tablet second but I think that is a good thing.
Not a ton of heat from my use, but the heat it does produce stays off your lap (nice!) thanks to this keyboard design
It does have a fan! - very quiet from my experience

CONFUSING CHOICES:
Expensive - why sell without the keyboard cover??

Why bother having a nice camera on the back? Maybe to record your own lectures for students? But it is an awkward angle for any video (it makes sense for document scanning though)

Ever since Microsoft released the Surface Pro line, I've always wanted to have one & this looks like the best one so far. I just wish they included the keyboard with the price.😪

I've had the surface pro 5 since fall 2017 for college (degree and master). In my opinion surface pro line saves you from owning a tablet and a laptop, because it can do both. It's great for taking notes in class and for working in MS office while getting all the functionalities of a windows PC. Surface pro 8 fixes the old design and better specs, I'm sure it is a great device! Nice video :)

The attention yo detail with the background (and setting otherwise) is much appreciated.

I can see this as a great product for students! At my uni, I see tons of people with the Macbook + iPad + Apple Pencil setup for general tasks on the Macbook and note-taking with the iPad + Apple Pencil. The SP8 seems to combine all that into one package, with compromises of course

This was an absolutely brilliant review. Your points were clear and I agree with everything you said. It really is the best 2-in-1 device you can get.
I can’t wait for the comparison video and I hope there’s a Surface Laptop Studio review coming soon ;)

I'm definitely buying one once the prices go down a little. Been using the surface pro 4 for nearly 5 years now and haven't regretted the purchase in the slightest.

The haptic feedback (at least after an update that I noticed) depends on the pressure you put on the tablet using the Pen. The harder you push down the more you can feel the vibrations, also can feel it a lot more using the eraser.

Best review I have seen of the MS Surface Pro 8 so far, nice in depth video talking about pros and cons and what you're going to get for your money. Definitely looking into picking it up for university as I need to both draw stuff as well as take a lot of notes, I have been waiting for this thing forever as the Pro 7 was kind of disappointing!

Really looking forward to getting the new surface pro 8. Currently running a surface pro 5 for last 4 years. It has never missed a beat. Agree with the other comments keyboard and now pen should be standard at this price point.

I bought it, love it! I was considering the HP Specter which I really liked as well for a light weight laptop, I'm satisfied with my decision.

This was, in my opinion, the best review you have done. And I am excited for the comparison video of samsung, apple and surface tabs!

For me as a student, the pro 8 is probably the better device as I see myself taking writing on the tablet with the pen during the lecture und the studio doesn’t seem to be made for this scenario. However, the Studio just looks so much more elegant with its keyboard to me. Furthermore the screen is bigger which could be important for reading e books while taking notes on an tab simultaneously and is just 200€ more expensive. What should I do?

The expandable storage is really surprising! These types of devices usually don't provide that option and will charge you an extra $200 to upgrade you to a higher storage capacity. So good on them for including that.

I own the Surface Pro 7+ and I will recommend anyone who is in the market for the latest hybrid laptop to get the Surface Pro 8. It's the best hybrid laptop you will find on the market right now.

Mike...great video review!

How about a more in-depth game testing? Emulation, perhaps?

I really think for the working professionals like Architects, or Civil Engineers, who often visit client sites, and have to refer to drawings on the go, this is an easy pop out and pop in option. It's powerful enough to support Revit or SketchUp, or Lumion on the cloud front. Sweet spot between UX and power.

I am a software developer and use a high end desktop for work. I hate laptops as they are not really portable devices, but do like tablets for casual web browsing etc. I recently bought the same model as you and have paired it with a thunderbolt 4 hub connected to dual monitors, a real keyboard and mouse and a few peripherals for a desk top replacement and it is more than capable. The fact I can unplug the dock, pick the device up and have it truly portable with all my stuff on it is miraculous frankly. It is close to the perfect every day device for work and down time watching movies, web browsing and light sofa based gaming.

I have just recently bought the Pro 8, I find it very useful and heaps of power, but I did find the touch screen at little unresponsive at times.
