Asus has a 13 inch Slate with an OLED panel and it's much cheaper than the Surface Pro 8. Launches sometime in December starting at $600

At $600, this is an AWESOME value compared to the surface pro 8. and the new OLED panel is so good for watching videos.

Asus seems to be going back to its 'roots' (meaning from 10-12 years ago) at being a fair priced/high-value beast manufacturer.

Definitely would be a great option at 600$

The thing is, the Surface products are great. They look amazing, and their performance is also great. But at that price point, you can get a really good full-fledged Laptop. And if you're an illustrator, you can spend a little bit more on a new pen tab. A little inconvenient if you want to draw when you travel, but it saves you a lot of money.

Sign of the future: I absolutely LOVE the fact that we're seeing 2-in-1 devices come down to consumer prices away from expensive business/enterprise levels. Why? Because it's going to start putting pressure on the Tablet Market where people see good media experience on a device that also doubles up as an affordable and workable laptop and all in 1 device for half the price of both !!

When this happens at high enough quality at these prices, iPadOS will become niche and Apple will be forced to reconsider 2-in-1 products of their own. That or by then ARM by NUVIA will power the next-gen 2-in-1 devices rivalling Apple-Silicon for Price:Performance and battery and on Windows-ARM all the while with improvements coming out:

* Improved touch/stylus/GUI
* Improved Cloud options
* LTE 5G
* Improved design details eg kickstand innovation, typepad improvements etc
* Lighter and more portable
* Screens are already looking much better.

Dude, when I saw Pentium, I was like, “are those things still exists”? What a shame.

I always wanted to buy a proper laptop for my Dad, and have always been drawn towards the Surface line, but that price tag is a heartbreak. This Slate is actually pretty dang good for ₹44K [India direct convert] considering my dad does reading news, excel and taxes. I got recently recruited and will look forward to getting this for my Dad with my Salary. Thanks, Dave!

Edit: I know this won't come to India at that price, might ask a relative to get it from the US, lol.

Honestly, when I plan on buying something like this, then I am not interested in how the performance is now, but how it will be 3-5 years from now. That's harder to evaluate, but more important to me. I don't buy new tech products every year. So if the Surface lasts me double the time of the Asus, I can make a fair comparison. What is the expected lifecycle of these products?

I've had the ASUS Slate 13 for a few months now and really enjoy it. It is great on the go and works well for all basic tasks (Word/Excel/PPT) and media consumption. I also like the way it looks and feels. The soft case did come with mine in the box.

Thanks for the vid Dave, this is very compelling as a media consumption device. I don’t love iPads for content consumption due to its aspect ratio. For this thing to throw in OLED and a $600 MSRP with a pen and keyboard included, it’s a great option for many people.

I must admit, the Asus is quite compelling. I've actively avoided these Windows tablet devices as all seem to be a poor value proposition for my use case. I may be swayed if these sort of devices start to see some real competition in terms of the value proposition.

That said, I couldn't be happier with my XPS 2in1 - seems to strike the right balance for me as someone who makes use of the traditional laptop form factor and occasionally flips the screen to either tablet or tent mode. I know my device is at the upper end of the market here but I've seen quite good 2in1 options from Dell and and Lenovo that hit the value sweet spot in my opinion.

I got a Lenovo IdeaPad 5 in 2020 for $600. It has an AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processor with integrated graphics, 16 GB of RAM, and a PCIe 3.0 SSD. It is also a 2 in one. The keyboard does not detach but it has a nice touch screen and a good pen that comes with it and the screen folds all the way to the back for an easy to use, flat surface. Like I said, I've had it for over a year and I'm surprised Dave never did a review. Especially in this instance I wonder why. To me it has so much more value than that ASUS because it has better internal hardware. I can run all of my engineering software without it slowing down and can play some reasonably intensive games (not any of the top graphics games, but decently intensive). 16 GB of RAM and a good AMD processor/GPU.

That Asus kickstand looks like it allows you to use it in vertical orientation as well as horizontal. That's quite cool. And that price is really, really good. Nice :)

I was excited about this up until the processor. I have 2013 MacBook pro that I'm looking at getting replaced, and if the processor was a little bit better I would definitely consider this.
