Microsoft is becoming like Apple in all the wrong ways. Taking away features like a headphone jack for no reason, and raising the prices, is really not great.

This really helped me choose! I needed something for school (some coding, note taking etc) and i didn't know if i should spend the extra money for the newer device. My PC at home runs all the heavy stuff, just needed something light and portable for uni, so the SP8 will be a much better deal for me. Thank you!

This is exactly the question I'm looking at for work, thank you for addressing this. As an office worker type, for my use the improvements are nice to see but not useful and the price difference not meaningful - work is paying. Your camera test in particular was nicely done. I've saved a few (Canadian dollars) by ordering the bundle through Costco and despite the unfortunate lack of fun colour, am quite happy with the deal at the moment.

I am in the market for one of these for Christmas and this is probably one of the better reviews out there comparing the two, looks like the Surface Pro 8 is the one for me given the costs and the functions that I need it for! Subscribed, keep up the great work!

I bought a Surface Pro 8, two months ago for $1321, $478 less than the rrp in Australia of $1799 and it runs very smoothly. Mainly use Word and One Note. This review was the one I was looking for except I would have liked you to test both in Recommended mode, as that is what I use and is the default set on the device. Mainly battery life and geekbench scores and perhaps at 60% brightness as that is what mine mainly goes to. I think 200 nits is too low for normal use.

Excellent comparison. Just what I was looking for as I look to upgrade from my ancient Surface Pro 3.

I like the Microsoft Pro, but how they can justify $448 to replace a $10 battery by a premium week turn around service then get "lost" (stolen) for two months and then give a three month extended warranty as compensation. The hardest part to swallow is I rarely used it unplugged.

Another thing to keep in mind is the design flexibility for repairing. Surface 8 is tough to repair compared to the higher design flexibility of Surface 9 repairing. That aspect should be seen too.

Had a SP5 in my old job, loved it. A real multi-tasker. Would take this over a Apple product, not even close.

Good video, Its a shame they reduced the battery size and removed the headphone jack, that to me makes the surface 8 better. even for the 30% power increase of the 9.

I was in the same position needing an upgrade on my old laptop, and needed one for work as well as personal. So I needed all the MS software, but nothing cpu intensive. And the SP9 wasn't enough of an upgrade to justify the already high price tag. So I now have the SP8. I also looked at the Macbook Air, and it being not upgradable at all, no touch screen, and possibly not so compatible with MS software, it got pushed aside rather quickly.

I have the Surf Pro 8 & have been using it for about a year now. Upgrading to the Surf Pro 9 may not be worth the Price.

Great detailed comparison, thank you. I was considering buying a Surface Pro 9, and now I might even go for 8.

Good video. I guess if the 12th Gen CPU along with the faster RAM is something that a person is looking for, than yes, the new Pro 9 will more than enough. If the 12th Gen CPU and faster RAM is no big deal for a person, than no, it's not enough for an upgrade. Personally, I would recommend the Pro 9 over the Pro 8 any day of the week.

Watching this on my Surface Pro 8. I definitly like having the heaphone jack on there. It's an important feature for a laptop/pc.

I was surprised you mentioned that the Surface Pro 8 got dynamic refresh rate with a firmware update. My Surface Pro 8 has the latest firmware and it doesn’t have DRR. The only way I was able to get DDR was by manually installing the Intel display drivers. I was then able to enable it. Interestingly if you try to get an updated display driver through Device Manager, and have the newer Intel driver installed, it will revert back to the original drivers thus removing DDR. I had to again reinstall the Intel drivers using their Intel Driver and Support Assistant app.

I have using my Surface Pro 9 for monthes. The drawback is the removed 3.5 headphone jack, forcing me to use wireless headphones instead. The left are merits. It is easy to carry out everyone. And the annotation on the pixel sense is the best for some applications only on desktop systeme. The most amazing is the SSD-slot that I have inserted a 2TB ssd after its purchase.

The Intel 12th Gen U series CPU definitely matters if battery life and performance are deal breakers.

Otherwise save money and get the Surface Pro 8. With the Intel i7 11gen CPU is good for any mid-level performance type of work.
