Why Grand Seiko are amazing! Quartz 9f Movement

Many people in the watch community are quick to class a quartz-powered watch as being a bad watch. I can’t help but feel they haven’t yet experienced the 9f quartz movement by Grand Seiko. Once you learn about the level of watchmaking that goes into a movement like the Grand Seiko 9F, especially the 9F86, then I think watch enthusiasts will appreciate this kind of quartz watch. And not think all quartz watches are low quality.

Grand Seiko launched the 9F quartz movement in 1993. It was the 9F8 series movement with a handful of innovations, the backlash auto-adjust mechanism, twin-pulse quartz mechanism and a super-sealed cabin. In short, the 9F movement is pretty awesome and I hope this video shows you why.

The 9F movement is amazing - I knew it was good but this description showed me I only a fraction of the quality and care that goes into these movements - Thank you Adrian 😊👍

Actually, your initial video made me buy my SBGN005 with its gorgeous blue dial, mostly appearing blackish, and it red GMT hand and I still love it to death! It's my travel watch and I grab it when I'm in a hurry needing accurate time keeping.. A bit disappointed that you sold yours, though... I will hang on to this great piece of artisan craftsmanship! Cheers from Germany and keep up the good work!

I've had a simple seiko quartz day/date for years. I got caught up in the SKX madness a year ago and bought one and wore it for about 5 weeks before I switched back. My SKX is gathering dust in the back of the closet and my quartz Seiko is on my wrist 24/7. Go Quartz!

Takes a jab at a grand Seiko’s lug width to advertise your watch straps.

My biggest gripe with mainstream quartz watches has always been the second hand not lining up with the markers in the chapter ring...nothing looks cheaper to me. This is pretty amazing. I have a Citizen Calibre 2100 and it is pretty amazing and accurate but nothing compared to this. Another awesome video, Adrian!

This quartz watch is so great that I never wore it, and now have sold it.

Hey Adrian ..Always enjoy your videos. I have a 60th anniversary Grand Seiko with that fabulous 9f quartz . Has the ceramic bezel that looks stunning .This is my prize watch that I will be will’ng to my grandson (7) when I pass . With minimal upkeep “battery every 3 years” servicing won’t be require until my boy
Now 7yrs will be a senior citizen..and I’ll be long gone. What a legacy to give someone you love.Have had the watch 2 months and when timed with an atomic clock app on my iPhone right on the money..Amazing.. Keep up the great work.

I thought a swiss made watch has to be mechanical. But somehow i got myself a Longines V.H.P Gmt quarz watch. And i love it. The movement with the flashlight setting and switching between the different timezones ist just amazing. Longines advertise the V.H.P collection with an accuracy of +- 5 seconds a year. One year ago, i set the watch witch the flashlight app and didn't have to change anything yet. And i mean ANYTHING. The watch knows how many days the month have, when the daylight saving time is, and the leap year change. And all of that witch an accuracy of 1 second in a year. I love it

Adrian, I am impressed you’ve updated your site in the videos, even this far back!

There is without doubt, endlessly more mechanical and engineering concepts in this watch any other mechanical piece I’ve seen! It’s tremendous!

The sweep ticking of the second hand is so soothing!

This was a super informative video. I was so impressed with the movement that I went out and bought a Grand Seiko SBGX261, thanks to you. And I'm really loving the look and size of the watch.

I've got the vintage GMT quartz with the green dial, it's a gem of a piece and anyone who ridicules anyone who has one just doesn't have a clue about Horology and collecting watches.

Great video Adrian! Your explanation was quite thorough, perhaps now Jack Forester will remember meeting you and teaching you all this! If you’ll remember we met in NYC at the Blancpain boutique and talked about these watches, I was wearing (and still own) my 003 black dial version of this watch. It’s got a special place in my heart for total reliability during travel while still stoking the passion inside me. Cheers, Brad

I learnt a lot from that and I have to say I am impressed by GS. My first ‘decent’ watch was a 1994 Omega Seamaster 300m Quartz - its still better than I am 😂

I forget where you can get the straps again, maybe you could say it a few more times in the next video!

Most of my collection are mechanicals, but I also love my few quartz and solar watches. I find it very hard to find "nice" quartz watches in the affordable range. They seem to be either cheap crap watches, gaudy bling watches with overcrowded dials and cases, or gorgeous way out of my price range watches (eg Grand Seiko). I have a nice Zeppelin GMT that gains less than a second a month, and has a nice retro look. I keep looking for nice solar watches, but the range of choice is so limited. Sometimes I just want to grab a watch and go, without having to set the time, the date, and wind it. I also really appreciate the accuracy. Sometimes I use the quartz watches to set my mechanicals.
