How Many Eggs Can You Eat in a Day? The Surprising Truth

For many decades, people have been advised to limit their consumption of eggs, because the yolk is high in cholesterol.

It was thought that if you ate cholesterol, it would raise cholesterol in the blood and contribute to heart disease... That was wrong.

The liver actually produces large amounts of cholesterol each day. When we eat more eggs, the liver just produces less cholesterol instead, so it basically evens out.

It appears that the response to whole egg consumption depends on the individual.

In the vast majority of people, it has no effect on Total or LDL cholesterol. The exception is some who are genetically susceptible, but even then it is debatable if the cholesterol increase actually influences heart disease risk.

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans has dropped the limit on dietary cholesterol.

The government's expert panel has now said that dietary cholesterol is no longer a "nutrient of concern."

How Much is Too Much?

Unfortunately, we don’t have studies where people are fed more than 3 eggs per day, or 21 eggs per week.

It is possible (although unlikely) that eating even more than that could have a detrimental effect on health. Eating more than 3 is uncharted territory, so to speak.

It’s also important to keep in mind that not all eggs are the same. The healthiest are omega-3 enriched eggs, or eggs from hens that are raised on pasture.

These eggs are much higher in omega-3s and important fat-soluble vitamins. So if you eat 3 per day, these small nutritional differences may start to add up over time.

Overall, the science shows that eating eggs is perfectly safe, even if you’re eating up to 3 whole eggs per day. Government recommendations have finally caught up too.

The same people who say don't eat more than 1.5 eggs a day are okay with you eating 8 oreos.

I increased my egg consumption when I started a lower carb diet. After 6 months my cholesterol is lower than it has been in years, probably because lowering carbs cuts out a lot of sugar and junk food. But the eggs have not been detrimental.

I love eggs, I eat them when ever I'm hungry for a snack or after I get home from track or cross country practice. Usually I'll eat about 4-6 at a time I don't see any problems with my health. I've also got a really strong and healthy heart so I don't see why people have big issues with it.

People usually count eggs as a single. Even if you say you consume 9 - 15 eggs daily you
have probably guessed short. There may be eggs in many
other foods they eat as a coating
or sauce - so it's probably considerably higher. I love them
In nearly everything I usally have
at least 6 in a single sitting scrambled or as an omelette
maybe even twice that. I use them
for washes / sauces / quick sandwich / tacos / pancakes and
so many more - so count everything
I'm sure it's much higher than you
think - I find them healthy and delicious -

Previously I eat less eggs or none per day and I got bad cholesterol level (really high). Then I tried to consume 2 eggs per day and now about 4 eggs per day (2 at breakfast and 2 any in lunch or dinner) and came back with the result.. it seems that it may reduce my cholesterol level to normal since I ate more eggs. The level reading shows very good result and I started all this like 3 months time.

So I will continue to consume eggs and now I beginning to love it. Haha..

I have been eating around 18 egg whites and 3-5 yolks for about 3 years. Recently got my blood work done (lipid profile, liver function, renal function), and everything was in the normal range.

I have eaten about 3-5 eggs every day for the past 3 years or so, with a few minor exceptions. Before this time, my blood pressure was extremely high, as well as my cholesterol, as I am obese (lost about 30lbs so far). I got my blood work done, and despite my weight (6'0 280lbs), my blood pressure and my cholesterol are near perfect.

Though for all of us who eat eggs every day let me ask you this. Is it something you just crave every day? I feel like those who crave it could have a deficiency in some way. Any thoughts?

Yes, it depends on the individual. PLUS what you eat it with/what the rest of your diet is like: eg chips or salad/veggies makes all the difference!
