10 THINGS I STOPPED BUYING (that saves me hours a week)

I'm always re-evaluating things in my home that are taking more time than they are worth. I often talk about our stuff as employees. With an employee, you pay them to do a job, and in turn, that job should benefit your company in an equal or, ideally, greater rate than you’re paying them. Your stuff is like that. All our stuff requires our time and attention to manage, care for, and inventory them. If the time you’re taking to manage, care for, and inventory these things isn’t equal to the value you get from these products, it might be a sign that you don’t really need them.
Now, I think one of my biggest pet peeves is wasting time. And so I’m always looking at simple ways to make my life easier, more streamlined, to make certain processes faster or easier. So I'm rounding up the top ten things I STOPPED buying because they ultimately just took too much time.

I never understood the overly obsessive bed decoration with lots of throw pillows, extra decorative blankets etc. i just want sleep in there and not have to shove all those (dust collecting) throw pillows on the (dusty) floor and then go through all the rigmarole of making the bed with all theses extras in the morning! Just give me nice duvet covers and pillows for sleeping and I’m good! I do like to have some throw pillows on sofas etc. one way of reducing the the storage space of decorative pillows is to use the Ikea version: buy one set of pillow inserts and get only covers for different seasons! So much easier to store just the covers!

Realizing you wear the same 20 clothing items over and over makes it easy to realize you already have a capsule wardrobe you just have a huge clothing museum.

Loved this! Whenever I use the term, “dust collectors, ” people always look at me like I am crazy. I am so happy there is someone else out there that sees knick knacks the same way I do. Thanks, Kallie 😆

The library has been a game changer for me. Toy library, book library, event renting dresses for specific events. Less time, less money, fewer single use toys, books and clothes to manage

Taught early childhood for 40 years - child care and public school. What you are saying about toys is SO true. A few open ended (kids can create with them) toys is so much better than a bunch of random toys. 😊

I think culturally it’s frowned upon to wear the same things over and over, but I thrive on it. I have several basic pieces I just mix and match regularly and I like that. It stresses me out to have to dedicate time and effort to getting ready, so it’s nice to have a closet of basics I can throw together and be able to dedicate my time and energy to things that actually matter. Thanks for validating, and glad to know there are more of us out there who feel this way!

I feel so validated for not having any rugs in my kitchen. From a decorative standpoint it feels like something is missing but, especially with toddlers, so impractical.

I love your presentation style. No excess words, to the point, and very good information. That’s why you are one of the few you tube channels I regularly watch. Keep it up.

I can relate! I still have a lot of things hanging around that I don't need any more. I'm retired now, so I never wear the jewelry I wore to work or the clothes. I live in jogging pants and t-shirts. Would I like to be more stylish--yes, but know one ever sees me! I go to the grocery store maybe once a week and a yearly visit to Dr, dentist and eye Dr., And church when I can get a ride. I don't go much or do much. In the summer I walk a lot, but in a 6 block radius. No real need to dress up or look stylish!! So all those things I spent all that money on to look good for work, are now irrelevant!!

Love this so much! I’ve been slowly getting rid of so many toys. I’ve noticed my kids would rather play with buckets of water, draw in a notebook, build with cardboard boxes. They find stuff I already have at home and enjoy those things way more than their toys. Makes my life much easier and clutter free!

I'm going to use this video to help me sorting out. I don't have small children any more but I do have too many ornaments and jewellery and clothes I hated or don't fit (until last Monday when I did a wardrobe purge). I'm going to have the odd ornament to make the place look nice not tonnes of them. We are selling our home so I'm getting rid of a lot of mine and boxing up a lot of the kids ornaments that they can't get rid of because their late Grandma bought them for them. They can then decide if they'd like to keep that in their space or in the loft when we move or if they can part with them.

I so admire your ability to cut back on things, buy or not buy items, sharing ways we waste time, money, space. It is all so practical and yet you are not depriving yourself or your family of anything.

I really like this video! One thing I really hate is running out of anything that I use on a regular basis. I don't (usually) buy random stuff, but I have two of everything I use, like laundry detergent, deodorant, etc. When the one I'm using runs out, I start the second one and put it on my list and replace the second one when I go to the store. I absolutely going to the store when I wasn't planning on going because I ran out of what I need. If I need to, I will mark the lid of the container I'm using, so I won't use both of them at the same time without realising it. The only thing worse than running out of one thing is running out of two at the same time!

I don’t call myself a minimalist but I own 5 pairs of shoes, 2 summer, 1 winter and my gym shoes. I wear 4 dresses on repeat in summer 😊 I’ve culled my accessories to 2 pairs of earrings and spend almost no time getting ready in the morning. I use our local library which also has an app for digital and audiobooks which we use all the time. It was never my intention to become a minimalist but I’m finally in that sweet spot where I can manage my inventory within minutes. Truly life changing and I have so much spare time now.

One of the things I started today is I closed my Amazon account, I was spending way to much money and it’s easy to do. I agree on everything you said. Great video ❤

I am definitely a bookworm & love books. However, I am also extremely particular about what books I buy & add to my collection. It needs to be something I will re-read multiple times so I actually don't have that many. What I do is make heavy use of my public library & inter-library loan.

It's great since I get access to tons of books & I don't have to worry about storage or maintenance. If I find myself checking a particular one out a lot, or always wishing I had it on hand to read, it goes on my to-buy wishlist. Otherwise, I can read it once, return it to the library & be done with it.

This video has made me feel so seen! I completely agree with every single point you've made. I'm at the same point in my life where I'm pregnant with a toddler, with no help from family, nor can afford to buy and I'm just trying to scale down on everything I can that'll make my life easier. I feel like many if not all of my friends are not at the same point in their life so they might look a bit weird at me for talking about this stuff, and recently I've been feeling like maybe I'm wrong.

I've been following you for years now and I love you realistic view on life and your values. It makes me feel much better that your values align with mine and makes me feel like I'm not alone in my journey.

Totally agree with throw rugs, especially rugs with fringes!. I have never understood why anyone would put a rug underneath a dining table. I have a great quality runner in our hallway with a foam pay under it. The rug does not move, is easy to vacuum and keeps the hallway quite where all the bedrooms are(we have hardwood).
