10 Things I Stopped Buying To Save Money | Saving Money+ Minimalism
My husband and I are in the pursuit of FI/RE. For those of you who don’t know what FI/RE is, the acronym stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. In order to reach FI/RE, we are decreasing our spending and increasing our multiple streams of income. We stopped purchasing these 10 things in order to free up cash in our budget to save for our first rental property.
I don’t want to get too Marie Kondo on you, but we stopped buying things that didn’t ‘spark joy.’
We’re debt free and on board with spending money if it brings us value, is a good deal and will improve our life.
My new mantra is quality over quantity, which is a huge mindshift change for me. I used to think more was better, but that is far from the truth. If you buy cheaply, you will spend more in the long run because you have to replace the items more often and won’t enjoy the quality of low-grade products.

Great video. I do disagree with #1. There is something beautiful about holding a book, reading other’s words, in your hands. The book comes to life in a way an audiobook cannot because you create the imagery and the voices. Etc. well worth the investment.

Excellent video! We're also pursuing "FI"!! Gotta cut that fat and save money, especially now during this crisis. We cut cable TV, lawn care, books, cell phone insurance, gym memberships, hair care, manicures/pedicures, bank fees, smart phone apps, new/leased/financed cars. We also use a dryer rack instead of our dryer (except for bed linens) save on electricity...

I pretty much have stopped going out to eat and watching movies in the theater... the dining out was sucking a HUGE chunk of our budget! Great job with all that you have cut. Genuinely, I love public transportation and I think you are a great role model for doing that!

Great ideas!!! All about prioritizing those expenses! Sally Beauty over going to the salon has saved me a TON of money!!!

This was really good Kelly! I feel you on sale shopping people say "I saved $100 because it was originally $200 and I got it half off" I say you just spent $100 lol I have dryer balls as well and cable has been a thing of the past 😁🏁

Great video! I already do some of the things that you mentioned like the electronic books, dryer balls and no cable, but I’d like to try some of the others to save more money. Not buying precut vegetables and fruit is one I am going try the next time I go to the grocery store.

No cable. Instead Roku and internet service. Don't use paper towels much. Mainly if there's a dog who has thrown up (we have 3 dogs). Have used cloth napkins for decades. I use a dryer rack for drying clothes. Etc. I mainly shop second hand for anything like clothes, home supplies like dishes, clothes for my grandkids, and pocketbooks. I always get water at a restaurant but we rarely eat out anymore. Haven't used dryer sheets for years, and I make my own laundry soap with a super easy recipe. As for supplements, calcium/vitamin D due to low bone density even though I drink lots of milk. Tfs

Oh, comment - cutting the storage unit. I cut a BUNCH before getting to this point and am now out of debt but yeah it has to go. I live in a tiny place so challenging but I know it will be worth it.

*The dryer ball sounds interesting. 🤔 Do you have to add anything every time you use them?*

Also.. I try to use gas wisely, but we live in a small town, try to be smart about going "to town" but not any other transportation options that would save money.

Can I stop using Clorox 2 color bleach? It is expensive. You mentioned giving up bounce strips. Can I save money not using the color bleach? Thanks, Jim

I work off my grocery list; I do however add extra dollars for miscellaneous😉 I budgeted $309 for my last Costco hall and I was within .85 cents. My husband says I have a problem 🤣 that was the most we every spent. Our usual monthly spend averages $160. Trying to slow down the need for groceries right now. I have stayed out of clothing stores but I did buy the B1free sandals at DSW. That was my splurge this month.

It took me a few years to get my husband on the generic ban wagon and also to shop at Dollar Tree.

I miss shopping at Aldi so much! My hubby is one of those people that turns his nose up at it and will only shop at Publix lol.
