This is exactly what happened to me this week. Signed an offer, but had another interview going on the side - once they offered me the position, I resigned the first offer - however it was a very awkward and uncomfortable conversation - I owed them a telephone call versus an email I thought. I had to do what was best for me at the end of the day.

Thank you for releasing the stress of that decision. I will add that to my interview process tools.

Most offers to a new role will have a probationary period anyway where there is no notice period required on both sides to terminate the employment, especially if it's BEFORE the stipulated start date.

Thank you. I was having this dilemma earlier today!

If that happens, do you use the offer at Company A as leverage with Company B? To inspire Company B to commit?

The problem is that that is happening to me at the same company for the 2 job opportunities. What do I do?

Great I caught you!! I have a question.. What do you say in an interview when you are older, just want to work part time, and you are not interested in 'climbing the corporate ladder'? I have an interview on Monday and this one has me STUMPED!! background: the job is a part time job. It's not a 'new' career. I retired from my previous job because I wanted to go part time to focus on my family, community and outside interests.

I disagree with this only because what if you’re interviewing within the same company not good advice for all job offers

I've noticed that boomers/gen xers are giving this advice of 'take the job and then quit if you get a better offer, ' whereas millennials are suggesting honesty as the better approach. I think that taking a job and quitting in the first week is a really bad thing to do. The advice from the older generations shows a huge difference in the way that we approach work and handle people. Boomers and Xers never really had to deal with the post-capitalist hellscape the American job market turned into and I think it shows in this piece of advice, which may have been good advice in 2008, but it sucks in the pandemic era.
