So yeah, I was looking fir the like button before I even clicked on the video. In the 90’s I could switch out the carton of ice cream snare drum for a 2x10 piece of lumber snare drum. One dude actually picked up his snare drum and held it upright to show me how it was beginning to take the shape of a STOP SIGN!! As in, it was wound up so tight, it was trying to make straight lines between each lug. Good. God. I was watching some Metallica vids the other night and some recent 2019 and 2020 live stuff popped up. It goes to Lars, and while he may or not have been hitting the kick and snare at the right times, he definitely was not doing the same on ANY of his cymbals. It appeared that he was just making up his own “accents” as he went along. I had to rewind it several times to make sure it wasn’t an editing glitch or whatnot. Nope. He was swinging across those crashes the same way every fan was playing air drums. Looking like they were having fun but horrifically inaccurate. So on the subject of snares and I’ll add in kick drums. I’m a live sound engineer with 25 years of insanity buried deep within. I have had guys open up a hard shell suitcase and set out their kick pedal, sticks, a few cymbals, and then stand the suitcase upright and clamp the kick pedal to it and voila, the suitcase kick drum, only to be surpassed by the snare drum case kick drum as the most surprising and unbelievable solution to a semi-non-existent problem ever. “Yeah, I lost my kick drum so I used grandma’s old girdle case for a kick drum, cause, I mean, what else would I have done?” But they worked, with a couple of them sounding like shit without a microphone, but were mindblowiingly awesome with a 52 aimed at them. Wow. And for the ice cream carton snare drum, I’ve got another story that’s more of a saying/insult/joke. Another great sound engineer buddy of mine named Mike used to run the drummer through his kit to get everything set just so, and often, when it got to the snare drum, Mike would ask the guy if he was playing the drums the way he would for showtime. When the drummer invariably replied with a “what”, or “what are you saying”, Mike would reply with a nice full throated and clear, “are you gonna hit that thing with your purse!” That usually got them to put on the big boy panties and play the drums. And a room full of cackling wannabe rockstars. So now hit the ice cream carton with a purse with whatever cadence you feel and call yourself Lars Ulrich. Done. Stamp it. Print it. Send it out. See ya
