Do you think that you know everything about “The Little Mermaid”? You might have seen the Disney princess movie, but only a few of you have actually read the original fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. We have to tell you that there is no love story and no Prince Charming because we are only showing you the messed up origins of “The Little Mermaid.” Make sure you watch this video until the end to know if Ariel lives happily ever after.

The beginning is really similar to what we saw in the Disney princess movie as Ariel was fascinated by the human world. As soon as she got old enough to go near the ships, she fell in love with a man and thought that he would be her Prince Charming. And unlike what we saw in the movie, she took much more time to get to know him before making the biggest decision of her life.

If you watched “The Little Mermaid,” you know that Ariel exchanged her voice for a pair of legs. But in the original fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, the deal that she made with the sea witch was more terrifying. The sorceress herself said that the young woman was dumb. But you’ll have to watch this video to know more about that crazy agreement.

Stay tuned to hear more about the messed up origins of the little mermaid like how the young girl suffered from the deal with the sea witch, how the Prince called her, who he finally ended up with, and if she ever lived happily ever after. Which fairy tale story do you prefer? Don’t be shy to answer in the comments section down below. We love to hear what you think!

Actually in the original story, Ariel doesn’t just throw the knife away at the end. She thrusts it into her body, and *then* materializes into the water.

My grandma told me and my sister of the original fairy tale when we were kids (I'm Danish) even though it's incredibly sad. I think it's healthy to tell kids of these tales. Sometimes life' just not fair, even though you try your hardest. Hans Christian Andersen was one angsty author, but one we're damn proud of!

I used to read these old fairy tales when I was young, and though they were disturbing they did offer some serious life lessons. The Little Mermaid was an integral part of my life and reminded me that doing the right thing - even after doing the wrong thing for selfish reasons, is the most noble. She chose to die rather then commit murder because her love was stronger, and she was rewarded for her sacrifice.

In the original story, the mermaid learns a valuable lesson in life.

In the Disney version she learns nothing, and gets exactly what she wants despite all the warning from her Dad, the crab, and even her closest fish friend!

What doesn't make sense to me was the fact that they kissed and cuddled. But the prince still saw her as a sister???

Funny how you deleted my comment about this being a complete ripoff of my own series. And how over a year later you still haven't added your sources ;)

The original is so depressing. :`( I'd love to see the prince's reaction when he wakes up and sees that she's missing...

Really not cool you guys ripped my footage without my knowledge or permission. Not cool to exploit other YouTubers, that's what stock footage is for or pay a license.

What I think what's more darker in the original The Little Mermaid is a storm scene from the book. In the original story, the mermaid thought the storm was so much fun and amazing, she did pay attention to how the prince and sailors were in terrible danger.
Unlike the Disney(where Ariel saves and grab Prince Eric right away), In the original story, when the mermaid saw the prince was trying to keep his head above water, he began to sink and drowning, she was so happy and excited that he's in the water and she thought he's going to visit the sea kingdom, it took her few minutes to realize if he was underwater, the prince will die(because humans can't breathe underwater)
This is one of the reasons why the prince never recognizes or ever saw the mermaid as his savior because he's already fully unconscious when the mermaid got to him and it took her forever to realize he's in danger.

I love the original story. I watched it over and over when I was a child. I cried when she died, but her love was so pure for the prince. She was willing to die for him and allow him happiness. She sacrificed all for him. So in a way she's a Christ figure. Very beautiful. It's not a fairytale where everything works out in a human way. But more like real life where things don't go as planned and you're faced with a decision to be selfish or selfless. And she chose selfless and ended up winning the better reward of eternal life. I read something from the book called my way of life and it goes like this, "The task before our heart is not to hold a fickle lover but to spend itself." In the original story of the little mermaid, the little mermaid does just that period.

I don't know why but I seem to Like the older version of the story than the newest. It's less romantic and although it was really dum of the mermaid to make that decision, I think the story had a much better ending than getting married to some random prince.

I feel the need to let everyone know that Hand Christian Anderson wrote this from the perspective of the mermaid, as he had fallen in love with another man and felt that they could never be together.
